Why Rosa Parks is a 'Truly Radical Change Agent’

Rosa Parks is truly a radical change agent. She has shown courage, passion, justice by simply voicing her beliefs. She denied all odds and went against the unrighteous discrimination in which was empowering the USA at this time. It was 1955 when Parks refused to sit at the back of the bus, where the black people were meant to sit. This may sound like a very small movement although it was incredibly moving and significant. Back then the race segregation was enforced throughout the USA, and many lost their lives simply because of the colour of their skin. This was more common in the south, through Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Georgia. Not only did Rosa Parks go against this racial segregation, this bus revolution occurred in Alabama, one of the most racist states of America in the 1900s. Parks put her own life at risk for a higher power, she stood up, risking her life to save countless more. This is why she is truly a radical change agent.

Her work inspired and encouraged others to stand up for what is right. This movement spiked others to have their own opinion on racial segregation, even the white people of America started to change their views. This was because parks encouraged others to have an open-minded view. Before this movement, most opinions on racial segregation was controlled by the government’s rules and the ripple effect of this. She challenged the status quo by denying it, she simply didn’t follow it. She didn’t get violent, she didn’t get aggressive and simply said no. Rosa Parks took a risk, putting her wellbeing on the line for others. She was risking for the wellbeing of others, because by doing what she did, she was starting a moment in which contributed severally to the abolishment of racial segregation. This saved many lives as a substantial amount of black people were beaten or killed throughout this time. ‘People often chosen to conform to society rather than to pursue person desire because it is often easier to follow the path others have made already, rather than creating a new one.’ – (Psychology Today, 2019) Rosa Parks created a new path. Rosa Parks may have offended the government as she attempted to abolish the racial segregation. Because Parks was denying the rules, in which where make by the government. Although she may have offended them, she was doing for the greater good.

There wasn’t any information that I could find about Rosa Parks personality specifically, as she was born in 1913 and was 92 when she died. Therefor there wasn’t a lot of negative information about her characteristics. Although I did find lots of positive information about her. It remains uncertain if there just wasn’t a lot of information about her negative side or just that she simply didn’t have a negative side. From others Rosa Parks was seen as extremely determined and intelligent yet humble as well. This is shown in one of her famous quotes, which is shown on the left. She was seen as a just, kind-hearted whilst brave women and no evidence of a less than perfect person was found. -(Help, H, 2019)

The aspect of Rosa Parks life that strikes me the most is that even after she got arrested for violating the segregation laws, she kept going. After this civil rights movement, a protest began lasting more than a year. This protest was called the bus boycott and started the day Rosa Parks’ bus movement. This protest was a movement, during which African American people refused to ride on the busses in Alabama. This protest was that big that Martin Luther King, jr, joined the protest as a prominent leader of this civil rights movement. At this time Martin Luther King, jr, was only a young pastor, although this inspired him and set him up for what he accomplished, later to this time. Rosa Parks worked with Martin Luther King, jr, on this protest and it was seen as the first large scale U.S demonstration against segregation. I found this very inspiring as she didn’t stop, even after she got punished. This most defiantly changed my worldview, as this teaches me that there is always bigger picture than it seems. It also teaches me that even if you get hate, even if you get pushed back, if you are doing the right thing and you believe in yourself, you can accomplish anything. The world is a big place, and sometimes you may not even know, the good that you do could help others that you don’t even know. This was most defiantly the case in Rosa Parks story. -(HISTORY, 2019)
