To be a leader in faculty development for expert clinicians who transition to a nurse educator role in academia, so they can develop strong competent, confident nurses ready to practice and will have an impact on patient outcomes.

Why

Because a large majority of nurse educators enter academia as expert clinicians with little to no training as an educator, leaving them to “figure it out” on their own, imposter syndrome, anxiety and sometimes returning to practice. Creating a welcoming, supportive onboarding structure with solid mentors will create educators who are prepared to equip their students with the skills they need to be successful.

My vision for new educators is: new educators will be connected with a formal mentor, be supported by their peers, and feel prepared to teach nursing students so they recognize the impact they can have on their students and their patients.

My mission is to create a comprehensive onboarding orientation program to the new nurse faculty role. This program will contain essential components such as a formal mentoring program, organizational guidelines and information, role development for the nurse educator, with support systems in place for the educator to understand their responsibilities and where to seek guidance if needed. Ultimately, this model could be adapted and used for new nurse educators across the country and globe.

Minor Milestone 1: Monitor for potential opportunities to support the DNE program. One of the main reasons that expert clinicians are not prepared to enter academia is that most do not have formal pedagogy training. By this point, I presume the DNE program will be a validated opportunity for nurse educators wanting to pursue a terminal degree in nursing education to receive focused training to enter academia. This role would pair nicely with the orientation program as that would most likely be a stepping stone for those faculty to transition into this program. Moved from year 4 to year 3.

I think I would use my strength as a relator to deal with character builders by taking time to do things in life that I enjoy for my own wellness during stressful moments throughout the process of achieving my professional goals. I love my friendships, time with my family and taking my mind off of work. I find using this strength will be pivotal in order to be successful.

Using my strength as a developer I have a passion for helping people grow. This is the primary reason I choose education. My project is an extension of that desire. I know the value in developing novice nurse educators and ultimately the impact that will have on the future of the nursing professionals we put into the world. This mentality will drive me to overcome several of the possible character builders listed.

This was my 5th strength. But, when I read the description everything 100% resonates with me. When I set my sights on something, failure is not an option. The part of the description that I feel most speaks to how to overcome the character builders is this, "You focus on timelines and deadlines. You break long-term projects into a series of specific short term plans, and you work through each plan diligently." This is the only way I know how to do big things. One small step at a time.

Using this strength of "finding common ground" I think will be most useful if I run across obstacles at the college level with implementing this program for all new faculty. I think, working together as a team, solutions can be found to support novice nurse faculty in their new role even if aspects of what I originally envisioned need adapted.

I see the need to use this skill as I develop my project over the next few months. As a novice myself in this space, it is inevitable that I will make mistakes along the way. I can use my support system (mentor, chair, classmates) to correct my path and find success.

I am so hard on myself. It is a character builder on its own. I need to remind myself that what I am doing is hard, and I can become good at it. If I don't always get it right on the first try, I am not a failure.

Whether they are practical skills or emotional skills, I can master them if necessary.

With each step of this process I am going to learn. My mentor stated in our meeting as we developed the plan stated, "I can help you with that." I will use the skills I have to find the resources needed to overcome the obstacles throughout this process.

This is not just for other people. This is for me. I am just as good as the next person.

I am a massive imposter syndrome person. I have a lot of trouble believing that I am good at what I do and that I can accomplish great things in the world of academia. Because of this, I will set the bar low so I know I can be "successful" in my eyes. I have to reframe my thinking and recognize that I have just as much ability to do big things as anyone else does.
