Another instance where I see magical realism, is when Vidal drinks the sleeping draught that Ofelia put into his cup. This allows the viewer not to trust Vidal's POV since he doesn't see Pan or the fairies because of the effect of the drink. At the end there is a remark in the movie that says Ofelia's trail can only be seen by those who know how to look. Our perception and that of the characters dictates if Ofelia's experiences are real or not. She jumped from one room to another with magic but we can't say it is not true since Vidal's vision is impare.

The first instance where I see magical realism, is when Ofelia goes inside of the tree in search of the key. This element takes place in the real world or at least that's what we see through Ofelia's POV. Inside the tree there is a gigantic toad that is out of the ordinary.

Magical Realism is the incorporation of something we think is impossible into the real world, making it part of the everyday life. The fantastical and the uncanny then develop into reality, not making clear what is real or fantastical.

In "An Introduction to Magical Realism" it is explain that there is an intersection between the real and the fantastical, sometimes this might be amplified by external elements leading you to be part of both worlds. Both worlds merge to form an in-between, a world that we might not be able to understand since it is exterior to what we already know.

Usually in magic realism, the fantastic is used as a way to fight against an establish regime that needs a new order and a new perspective. Magic is used to gather a new identity or view.

Disobedience is used all through the movie not only from Ofelia but from the doctor, Mercedes and the Guerilla. The magical world serves as a juxtaposition to understand the real world. When Ofelia disobeys and when the doctor also goes against Vidal to help the rebels, we put into question the reactions of the central source of power. We create a new perspective, we redefine what we already know. It allows the characters and the viewers not to conform. Ofelia's disobedience help us at the end to see how both the magical and real had their faults but still complement each other. Magical realism served a bridge to expand and question what we think about fairy tales.
