This allows the viewer not to trust Vidal's POV since he doesn't see Pan or the fairies because of the effect of the drink. At the end there is a remark in the movie that says Ofelia's trail can only be seen by those who know how to look. Our perception and that of the characters dictates if Ofelia's experiences are real or not. The magical world serves as a juxtaposition to understand the real world. When Ofelia disobeys and when the doctor also goes against Vidal to help the rebels, we put into question the reactions of the central source of power. We create a new perspective, we redefine what we already know. It allows the characters and the viewers not to conform.
