ADVANCED MATERIALS FOR ANTENNAS AND MICROWAVE DEVICES by

Course Description:
During the course, the basic principles of material science will be presented for the structure and properties of the materials used in microwave devices and antenna applications. There will be a number of lectures focusing on the so called "functional materials" with tunable dielectric and/or magnetic properties. In addition, microwave and 3D printable structures and advanced processing of ceramics will be demonstrated. The theoretical background and the recent evolutions in the area of metamaterials for innovative antennas will be presented. Hands on simulations and measurements of reconfigurable antenna prototypes using magneto-dielectric materials have been arranged during the course. Case studies will be presented with characterization measurements of selected materials.

Topics of the course:
- Material basics (structure and properties of materials)
- Functional materials (adjustable εr, silicon based, ferrites with adjustable μr and mixtures)
- Synthetic Metamaterials (nanoscale to 3D printed materials)
- Microwave and 3D printable structures
- Advanced Processing of Ceramics
- Magnetodielectric materials and antenna reconfigurability (theoretical analysis and modelling)
- Case studies (hands on measurements of selected material parameters and antennas with polarisation and frequency tuning)

Course schedule: 34 hours.
Prerequisites: basics on antennas.
Availability: 25 students.
Additional Info: the course gives 1.5 ECTS credits.

The course fee is 390 GBP for participants coming from academia and other non-profit institutions (PhD students, post-docs, etc.), and 780 GBP for participants coming from the industry. Student grants:
