i enjoyed listening to the panel, especially when Fernanda's mom was the speaker, since it really highlighted the intersectional identity of autism and culture. Autism is something that affects individuals of all cultures, yet different cultures engage with it differently. Hearing about her experience as a mother was really enlightening, especially when she shared about the hardships she had to go through in order to make the best decisions for her son. I really admire her resilience and compassion.

I really enjoyed the panel on Monday. I appreciated hearing first-person perspectives from both the police officer and mother who both have autistic family members. I think that even though the police officer was really passionate about using respectful tactics when approaching autistic people, I still feel discouraged in general since I think that the issue of police officers being overaggressive with autistic people is more of a systemic and institutional issue.

I found it interesting to see the different experience people have with autistic individuals. As every relationship is very different. From mother to classmate to average civilian. I found it shocking and sad that police are not properly trained to deal with autistic individuals. Even though their whole job is to protect people. It shocked me how inadequate their training is. They are given so much power for such a short and lack of knowledge and training.

I have never heard of it before though, so maybe with more advertising or something they could get more people to be MET team clinicians since it sounds like an amazing profession that could revolutionize law enforcement treatment.

I agree with the comments that were made in class on Monday in regards to our first speaker. Though it was nice to hear his thoughts, his views aren't necessarily representative of most officers. I do wonder if, because of his experience with his family, if he has tried to educate his fellow officers more.

I found it enraging that most of the calls that police officers get involve mental health crisis and issues yet they only have about 8 police officers on the 'Met?' task force. It shows that we need more clinicians responding to calls instead of police officers who have guns and use these guns so sporadically. Additionally, it's crazy to me that police officers get so little training yet they are expected to be in charge of people's lives and safety.

When we were talking with the cop, I couldn't help but note that he had a very stereotyped view of autism. When asked what he looks for to determine if someone potentially said autism, he said the very typical signs, but failed to realize that all individuals may present differently. This understanding to me reflects that the minimal training they do have is not at all comprehensive or clear enough to make it apparent that just because an individual does not present with the typical signs of autism that they are not autistic. Cops need to be aware that individuals may be autistic and react accordingly, even if the individual does not initially seem to have autism

I liked to hear from the officer but do wish that we could have heard someone that hasn't personally been affected by disability in their lives to see what the general consensus / viewpoint is from those that aren't as well versed in the impacts autism specifically can have on a family. Officers don't always have much experience working with these individuals (as the officer did mention). Your mom's account is super relatable to me personally. We always had issues with regional center with my brothers and had the cops / social services constantly in and out of our home due to false allegations from teachers and other aide support throughout my childhood of abuse. Especially since my brothers had elopement and issues with physically harming themselves. (Throwing, kicking, hitting walls, etc) Like clockwork, a new social worker would show up every 6 months after one case was closed but another got opened..

Why do police officers get such little training and then are handed weapons and injected into the legal system where there is less accountability?

Being a police officer means a conflict of interest when being prosecuted, it's crazy there is such little training to be able to carry a gun in a legal way. I also thought the idea of telling an officer about someone's mental health struggles to try and have them be safer was an interesting concept, but until they're trained they still may hold biased views that could cause them to make the situation more unsafe, or they may not believe that the person has that and that they are just making an excuse, so it seems the training is really most important.
