Declaration of Independence states that the people have a right to “alter or abolish” government when it does not meet their needs.

Shays wanted to alter government because it was not meeting the citizens’ needs. The government did not pay him for his service and now they wanted to take his land away because he couldn’t pay his taxes.

Today, we see protests in the United States for rights for equality, to change government and for our climate. We had a group, on January 6, 2021,that wanted to alter or abolish the government. The day started as a protest and ended in an insurrection by the group wanting to change what they believe was a fraudulent presidential election. The group wanted to stop the vote by the Electoral College.

What is your perspective on Americans altering or abolishing their government by protesting?

I agree that Americans should be allowed to alter or abolish the government because if there is a problem with it, it is important for citizens to be allowed to create a change. The citizens being governed by a government that is not meeting their needs or standards should be allowed to change it. In the American Revolution they had to fight a huge for just to change their government. The colonist were not happy with King Gorge the lll because he was not a good leader. The colonist decided they would fight back against him but in the new way of government, the people could just vote on how they want to change it instead of a big war.

I believe this should be something that people should do. As time moves on priorities and standards change, and we shouldn't be the only ones that change, the government should too. If we keep abiding by a rigid book of laws and rights written by men over a hundred years ago, don't you think that many of their thoughts, ideas, or actions might be a little outdated? We as a changing society should also change our government and laws as the majority see fit. Following a bunch of rules written far in the past should not be the way we should live, we should follow and change the laws that would benefit our nation as a whole.

It should be allowed because the first amendment is about freedom of speech which is allowing the people to have a voice.

I agree Americans should be allowed to alter or abolish the government. Altering or abolishing the government ideas were created so that the governments would not have to much power and become like another King George, and so that way everyone would be heard not just the government and this should be allowed today because without it no one would be heard. An example of this is in Shay's Rebellion the farmers did not get there voices heard about the taxes until they stood up and said something which lead to the thirteen states to compromise and change the law so that way they would not worry about being another king George.

This is how the government will listen to you, and probably change. In my opinion, there are other ways to make a change in the government but protests are how more people will pay attention and help. They should be allowed to do this because it is our first amendment right such as freedom of speech. For example, people use protests today to create change in equal rights. So far the protests have helped and the government has noticed.

I agree with Americans trying to alter or abolish their government by protesting and think this should be allowed because one of the core values of the United States' government and society is freedom of speech, which I agree with and think everyone should have a right to. Although I do not agree with the use of violent protests to change the government, I think every person has the right to peacefully protest and alter their government since each citizen needs to feel content with how a society or country is working, especially since freedom of speech is a part of the Constitution in this country. Altering or abolishing the government was created for the citizens of a country to live happily and not be worried about their government. Abolishing or altering a government should be allowed today because every American has a right to and needs to feel content. An example of this was when the American colonists protested against Parliament and King George III because they believed that the English government was infringing on their rights. Once the Americans rebelled, they were eventually able to lead better lives.

I agree that Americans altering/abolishing the government by protest is a very strong way to form a great nation. I realize that if there were no protests that created change then the founding father's work would just be wasted. The founding fathers created a principle for this country that showed the people make the rules and the people run the government. A United nation that did not have everyone working together to create change would not be "United". Protests in the nation are a strong way to create an idea and prove that the people will fight for their country. The people altering/abolishing government actions take into new perspectives and creates a fair and well-balanced country.

The idea of altering or abolishing the government was created so the government doesn't hold so much power and should be allowed today so the people have a voice as well by protesting.

I think that we should be allowed this right. It guarantees the people a right in government and allows for rules to be changed when times are changing as well. Not only this but it also helps to make sure that what happened with the British government doesn't happen to us again. It allows for the people to protest for the change and start fresh without the need for war. But we should stay nonviolent and trust that our rights will allow for the government to listen and respect our opinions. Instead of tainting them with riots.

When change is needed it is our right to alter by using our first amendment . I agree altering or abolishing the government laws Americans are placed on should be in use to fit the society values in a nation . Whether its a higher minimum wage for those with lower income or to alter laws they can restrict the population . You must speck to be heard and cause on awareness in order to make a difference .To must show the reality of our struggles . To alter or abolishing these laws it can make the better for the people and to no longer let the law cause our difficulties .

Personally after analyzing this topic I do believe and agree that Americans should be able to alter or abolish the government by protesting. I think this is because not only is it fair, but the whole point of a democracy is for people to have a voice and protesting for change is one of the best ways for citizens to create change. An example of how this can be really helpful to society is because by protesting you can share your opinion with many and influence others or just give them a different perspective or viewpoint of the situation. In conclustion I am a strong believer that Americans should be able to alter or abolish government through protest.

Americans trying to alter or abolish their government by protesting should be allowed because we are all allowed to create change and have a voice in the community. Altering or abolishing the government ideas were created so that we could change things so it meets our needs and should be allowed today because it helps everyone have a voice. Protesting is a good way to get a message out fast. If the government isn't supporting your needs, you can change it. An example of this is when the colonists decided to step out from under King George. They made the choice that the government wasn't right for them and they abolished it.

My perspectives I think Americans should be allowed to alter or abolish their government. We have the right to alter. For example we have the freedom of speech and we should this freedom of speech in order to be heard. We should be heard so our government doesn't over power us. Altering by protesting is something we can express and make a change for our government. So I do agree that altering or abolish the government by protesting should be allowed.

I think people could abolish their government because people should have a say if they don't like the government people should have the right to protest to make a change because they should listen to the people sometimes the people know what is right and what needs to be changed but sometimes people can protest in a harmful way which is not good people use weapons and start riots for more attention but that's, not the right way people should be able to protest on what they believe in but in a more peaceful way is a more effective way because if you are protesting peacefully then others will see that you are doing a good thing and join and you will get more attention. So in conclusion I think people should be allowed to protest to abolish their government but they should approach the situation in a calmer and safer way because if they approach a more violent way they could do more damage than already done and cause chaos and riots

I think that Americans should be given the opportunity to speak out and protest about what they believe in and if it means that they could alter or abolish the government in a good way. However, I don't think anyone should protests about something that wouldn't strengthen our government or might even make it bad and cause problems. If an American believes in something that would make a positive difference, then they should have the right to be able to protest and try and make the difference to the government.
