Mycenae was the first ever Greek state. It flourished between 1600 and 1100 B.C. The Mycenae Greeks were part of the Indo-European family of peoples who spread into the southern and western Europe, India, and Iran. The Greek state was made up of powerful Monarchies. Some historians believe that the Mycenaeans also spread outward militarily, conquering Crete and making it part of Mycenaean world. The early Greeks helped develop western civilization because of their government, it shaped the later government that would soon form. Another reason why is because of a man named Homer. He was the first greek to write epic poems, long poems that tells deeds of a great hero. That would impact later civilization as well.

Classical Greece is a period in time from around 500 B.C. to 338 B.C. There were two significant wars in the time. The first war was fought between 499 B.C. and 479 B.C. The greeks defended themselves from two Persian invasions. Athens would later take over the rule of the Greek world. Athens expanded their empire and democracy flourished at home. However, the Athens rule over Greece split into two major camp, Athens and Sparta. The two camps built two very different societies and war broke out soon enough. This was the second war. It lasted from 431 B.C. to 405 B.C. Athens had surrendered. Their walls were torn down, navy disbanded, the Athens civilization was destroyed. The greeks experienced major intellectual growth. This period became a major source for the development of the western civilization.
