What is Ehukai Beach Park Known For?

Ehukai Beach Park is situated on the North Shore of Oahu. The North Shore of the island is often referred to as "The seven mile miracle" due to the ocean conditions produced in the winter months. From October through April large open ocean swells arrive on this beach and when combined with the optimal wind direction and shallow reef can produce waves in excess of twenty-five feet, perfect for daring surfers. These waves are extremely dangerous, and in some cases they are deadly. It goes unsaid that these mountains of water should be navigated by experts and professionals only.

Ehukai Beach Park's Rich Surfing History and the Famous Pipeline

Centered right in the water off of Ehukai Beach Park is a shallow razor sharp reef called Pipeline. This reef creates impeccable surfing conditions in the winter seasons. For many years this wave was deemed un-surfable by people due to how fast and big it was. Surfing has always been a large part of Hawaii's culture, and it is still extremely common to this day. Until 1961, surfers had tracked waves up and down the North Shore of Oahu, but nobody dared to surf the unforgiving wave, Pipeline. This all changed in 1961 when Phillip Edwards became the first person to successfully take on this wave. Since then, surfers have flocked from all around the world to experience the perfect wave. Pipeline is now arguably the most famous, and the deadliest wave in the world due to its extremely shallow razor-sharp reef and heavy surf. This wave is so famous that there are several annual competitions that take place here and people from all over the world flock to see pros battle over the waves. Along with the famous pipeline, Ehukai Beach Park houses other famous and dangerous waves such as Gums, Backdoor, and Off the Wall. All of these spots are extremely critical and reserved for experienced surfers and watermen.

On the North Shore of Oahu, located just steps off of the busy Kamehameha Highway, is Ehukai Beach Park. This sandy stretch of pristine shoreline attracts millions of beachgoers every year to swim in the crystal clear water, or to watch the pounding waves. In the summer, the water is extremely calm and perfect for swimming and snorkeling, however that can not be said about the winter.

Topography of Oahu's North Shore

Ehukai Beach Park hold very basic topography. With very minor topographical changes, the Beach tends to be relatively flat during the summer months. However, when the currents are strong in the winter large amounts of sand are moved north up the coastline and this can crate mid size drop offs and slopes on the beach. The beach tends to have a slope that drops around 15-18 feet as it approaches the waterline in the middle of winter.

How was Oahu Formed?

The island on Oahu was formed by 2 main volcanoes under the sea, and smaller volcanic craters located on the surface of the island. Waianae and Koolau are the large under sea volcanoes which are now dormant. Waianae is about 2.2-3.8 million years old and Koolau is about 1.8-2.6 million years old. Small craters are located on the surface of Oahu such as diamond head, punchbowl, salt lake crater, Koko head and Koko crater, and more. All of these locations are fairly young in comparison to Waianae and Koolau. They are thought to be between 70,000 and 500,000 years old.
