What is the service? 
Residential child care are children’s homes that ensure that the needs of children are met, when they can’t live with their own families/carers. The service provide children with a structured, nurturing and homely environment that allow the children to feel safe, valued and grow strong and successfully. Children are provided with food, shelter and space to play in a caring environment. 
What does the service offer?
The service offers children/young people a home that ensures their needs are met when they cannot live with their parents. The service helps children to grow and develop, as well as providing them with many different facilities such as shelter, food, or leisure. When children join residential homes they are provided with a care plan, their care plan explains why the child is living in the home, what is supposed to happen while they are living there and what is supposed to happen at the end of their stay. While the children/young people are staying at the residential home they still receive education, the service ensures that children remain at school, if they do not have their own school place the service will provide them with one. 
Who would use the service?
Child or young people if: 
Their parents are unwell 
They have problems with their family and need to spend time away from home
They have a disability and need a break from living with their families
They are in the care of local authority subject on a Court Order 
When foster parents are not available 
Families/carers also access the service is they are arranging accommodation for the child/young people 
Who provides the service? 
The service is a statutory organisation, meaning it is provided by the central government and local authority’s children service. However, some residential child care services are private providers. 
Any service that is provided to child or young people, including residential child care, have their own Quality Standards Officer who is responsible for visiting children’s residential homes monitoring the homes against their Statements of Purpose. 
What type of service is it?
A child’s residential care is a specialist service, it meets the needs of children or young people that are ‘looked after’, and they are a particular group. In order to access the service they must fit in with the specific criteria. Not all children and young people can access the service, it is only children that fall into a specific group.

Fiver Rivers provide many different residential care homes around the UK, they have 8 different residential care homes in total. ‘The Orchard’ is one of these residential homes it is an established country house on the outskirts of Taunton. For children/young people aged 11-18, either male or female, it holds up to 4 children at one time. The home has access to clinical services, the service work with children and young people who might have experienced poor treatment, abuse or neglect.

RESPITE CARE Respite is a temporary instututional care for elderly, sick or individuals with specific needs. This provides relief for the usual carer. This provides a break for both the indivdual that is being cared for and a potential parent that is caring for their child who has a physical or learning difficulty. This may be a short break such as a weekend so that the usual carer can keep up on sleep or to have a chance to socialise or spend time with other family. The respite care could also be organised through the childs education service such as an after school club or a week long holiday. After school clubs are a form of respite care. This offers the childs constant carer a chance to have a break from caring. This may be provided a few days a week so that the parent is able to have a small break from caring for their child. This tends to be a universal service which means it is available to all young people and children. Term holiday week depending on if the individuals needs the provision may be universal, meaning it is available to all children or specialist meaning thery are trained to cater to children with specific needs such as a learning difficulty or physical disability. Examples of what these services may provide: Trips (beach or woods where there are accessible services such as wheelchair accessible areas) Themed weeks such as Chinese new year Games such as bingo or word search Baby sitting services also provide respite care. This may be a private service such as a place were there are limited places. These service may be statutory meaning it is provided by the council or local authority however it is possible that parent, carers, guardians pay for an extended or private service. It is also could be a charity service such as a church group for children such as messy church were children arive before or after school to do creative art projects. Respite care provides a service to children and young people that often ranges between 3 and 18 years old with: Physical disabilities Autistic spectrum disorder Attachment difficulties Learning disabilities Profound and multiple disabilities Complex health needs Life-limiting conditions Inserting image...Inserting image...
