SUPPLIES TO MAKE THE PLATONIC SOLIDS OR 3D SHAPES:

Paper Straws, Pipe Cleaners, & Scissors

STEPS:

1. Cut all of your straws in half. To make the first shape, a triangular pyramid or a tetrahedron, you will need 6 straw halves and 3-4 pipe cleaners. Begin by making a triangle.
2.Thread the pipe cleaner through three straw pieces. Twist them together at the top point. At each point of the triangle attach another straw piece. When you run out of pipe cleaner, just twist another one to the end of the last one. Connect the next three pieces at the top to make the tetrahedron.
3. Next, make the cube in the same fashion. Make a square first, then attach a piece going upward at each corner.
4. Lastly make a dodecahedron in the same manner. Start with a pentagon, then from each angle, add another pipe cleaner and straw to build upward.
5. These can be places inside of each other and nested. You could even hang them all together with a string.

With this worksheet activity they will match each unfolded net to the correct shape it will form. This will help with being able to fully think through how many sides, faces, etc each shape has. This is another great option to help the students learn their polyhedras.
