Appreciation for Nature and Sustainability Issues in Malaysia (Islamic Perspective)

In Islam, nature is one of the greatest signs of Allah’s creation. Every mountain, river, forest, and creature reflects His wisdom and power. Muslims are encouraged to appreciate and protect the environment as a form of gratitude to Allah. The Qur’an teaches that everything is created in perfect balance (mizan), and human beings are appointed as khalifah on earth to maintain that balance.

In Malaysia, we are blessed with rich biodiversity, rainforests, and beautiful landscapes. However, these blessings face serious challenges such as deforestation, pollution, waste problems, and climate change. These issues show how humans have neglected their duty as stewards of the earth. Islam warns against israf (wastefulness) and fasad fil-ardh (destruction on earth), reminding us to use resources wisely and avoid causing harm to nature.

Appreciating nature means recognising it as an amanah from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught that planting a tree, saving water, or feeding animals are acts of charity (sadaqah jariyah). Caring for the environment is not only a social duty but also an act of worship that brings continuous rewards.

In the Malaysian context, sustainability can be practiced by reducing plastic use, conserving energy, joining tree-planting programmes, and supporting eco-friendly initiatives. These small actions reflect Islamic values of moderation, responsibility, and gratitude.

Summary

Islam teaches that nature is a trust from Allah, and humans must protect it as part of their duty as khalifah. By practising sustainability in daily life, we show appreciation for Allah’s creation and uphold the balance that He has established on earth.

SEM 2 USRAH WEEK 1 : Taaruf and Acquisition of Hikmah through ‘Ibadah

Today, our group held the first Usrah session for Semester 2. The session began with an introduction among all members, where we shared our names, backgrounds, and expectations for the semester. This activity helped us become familiar with each other and created a friendly, supportive atmosphere for learning and discussion. After the introduction, the main topic of the week, Ḥikmah and ʿIbādah, was presented and discussed.

📌 Acquisition of

Hikmah

(Positive Values) from ‘Ibadah

Hikmah refers to wisdom, understanding, and the ability to act rightly according to Allah’s guidance. In Islam, hikmah can be acquired through sincere ‘ibadah (worship). Acts of worship such as prayer, fasting, and remembrance of Allah help purify the heart, strengthen faith, and develop positive values like patience, humility, and self-discipline.

📌 Setting the Right

Niyyah

(Intention)

Niyyah means the intention behind an action. In Islam, every deed is judged by its intention. Setting the right niyyah ensures that acts of worship are performed sincerely for the sake of Allah SWT, not for praise or personal gain. A correct niyyah brings spiritual value and acceptance of deeds.

📌 Applying the Right

‘Amal

(Practices)

‘Amal refers to righteous actions and good deeds. Islam emphasizes that actions should be practiced consistently and with sincerity. Good ‘amal includes acts of worship such as prayer and fasting, as well as kindness, charity, and helping others. The quality of actions is as important as the actions themselves.

📌 Internalising

Ihsan

(Positive Virtues)

Ihsan means performing acts of worship with excellence and awareness that Allah is always watching. Internalising ihsan encourages Muslims to develop noble character traits such as honesty, compassion, patience, and responsibility. Ihsan transforms good actions into meaningful acts of devotion.

✨ Summary

By acquiring hikmah through ‘ibadah, setting the right niyyah, practicing righteous ‘amal, and internalising ihsan, a Muslim develops strong faith, good character, and a balanced spiritual life.

📌 Introduction

The main purpose of human creation is to worship Allah SWT. Through sincere ‘ibadah, Muslims acquire ḥikmah (wisdom) that shapes their character, discipline, and spiritual awareness.

📌 Ṣalāh (Prayer) as a Source of Ḥikmah

Ṣalāh plays a vital role in developing moral consciousness and obedience to Allah. Allah states in Surah al-‘Ankabut (29:45) that prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing.

Wisdom gained from Ṣalāh:

Strengthens awareness of Allah

Prevents immoral behaviour

Encourages obedience and discipline

Key attributes developed:

Sincerity (ikhlas)

Fear of Allah (taqwa)

Constant remembrance of Allah

📌 Ṣawm (Fasting) as a Source of Ḥikmah

Fasting was prescribed to help believers attain taqwa, as mentioned in Surah al-Baqarah (2:183). Ṣawm trains self-control and strengthens spiritual discipline.

Wisdom gained from Ṣawm:

Develops taqwa and self-discipline

Builds empathy towards the needy

Draws believers closer to Allah

Key benefits:

Awareness of Allah’s constant observation

Weakening the influence of desires and Satan

Encouraging more acts of worship

📌 Zakāh (Charity) as a Source of Ḥikmah

Zakāh purifies both wealth and the soul. Allah commands in Surah al-Tawbah (9:103) that zakāh cleanses believers and increases blessings.

Wisdom gained from Zakāh:

Purifies wealth and character

Reduces greed and selfishness

Strengthens social responsibility

Key benefits:

Cleansing sins and negative traits

Supporting the poor and needy

📌 Ḥajj (Pilgrimage) as a Source of Ḥikmah

Ḥajj trains believers to submit fully to Allah’s commands and maintain good conduct, as stated in Surah al-Baqarah (2:197).

Wisdom gained from Ḥajj:

Strengthens discipline and obedience

Promotes patience and self-control

Enhances unity among Muslims

Etiquette of Ḥajj:

Avoid indecent acts and disobedience

Avoid arguments and disputes

Focus on worship and righteous deeds

✨ Summary

‘Ibadah nurtures moral discipline, taqwa, and spiritual purification.
