These are some of the very brave members of "Peace Communities" in Colombia. They are people I worked with in remote conflict regions of the country in the mid 2000s. Most likely displaced due to the conflict, they formed these communities to provide an alternative to succumbing to the war, or being forced to join an armed group.

My role with the "Peace Communities" was as an "accompanier", or "unarmed bodyguard". As part of an international team, and at their request, we provided protective accompaniment for civilians threatened by activities of the three main armed actor groups in Colombia at the time.

That accompaniment was in two forms. One was physical, as we lived closely and traveled with them. The second was political, as we communicated with heads of police, army generals, the human rights official in the Vice Presidents office, with embassies, the United Nations, and with the equivalent of the attorney generals office in Colombia.

Each form provided protection for civilians who were too often caught in the crossfires of the conflict, and also politically stigmatized as the military and paramilitary would falsely assume - or claim - that they were members of the insurgent group, the FARC or supporting them.

This is a video about the Nature Conservancy's Work with Indigenous and Local Communities. Climate change is amplifying the human rights related threats of Indigenous communities around the world. Because the lives of many indigenous people are so intricately involved with nature they are at risk as illegal logging and mining and ranching entities encroach on their territory, often by force.

This is a thesis written by a former human rights defender that links the making of chocolate with the struggle of a community I worked with in Colombia. The Peace Community of San Jose de Apartado has a longstanding cultural practice of chocolate making. It has provided them with social cohesion and a source of income. This cultural practice has changed over the years in order to provide more protection for the community as well as navigate insurgents in the area.
