Double standard required women to observe stricter standards to behavior than men did. Even though women were still challenging women's role by running wild by showing skin, and doing reckless things double standard kept them doing what they are suppose to do like cleaning, cooking, and kept up with household chores.

During this time period women were expected to work in places where they were believed to belong for example as a nurse, teacher, and librarians. That's why when men went to war, and women started to take over their jobs, women felt good about themselves. Unfortunately, once men came back they started to take their jobs back and women were once again pushed to the side and not taken seriously in the work field.

A flapper was an emancipated young women who embraced the new fashions and urban attitudes of the day. They wore close fitting felt hats, bright waistless dresses an inch above the knees, skin toned silk stockings, sleek pumps, and strings of beads. They cut their hair into boyish bobs and dyed it jet black. They were assertive and bid for equal status with men by smoking, drinking in public, and talking openly about sex. Women began to act more "masculine" and take charge of their own lives symbolically by becoming flappers.

They now saw marriage as an equal partnership, but still believed that housework and childrearing was a women's job. This was a tremendous change in tradition; women were working their way up.

Margaret Sanger/birth rate

The birth rates went down rapidly in the 1920s due to the availability to info about birth control. Margaret Sanger opened the first birth-control clinic in the United States in 1916 and founded the American birth control league in 1921. She also fought for the rights of physicians to give birth-control information to their patients. Also, women's attitudes changed toward having so many children due to the fact that they were now able to work and weren't obligated to stay home and just watch the kids. This changed a lot of things for women because it gave them a new opportunity to live their lives as they wished not as they were expected to.

Social and technological innovations simplified household labor and family life. Women were no longer tied down to being stay at home moms. Innovations such as ready made cloths, sliced bread, and canned food freed women from some of their traditional family responsibilities. Although women fought to have the right to work, working class women quickly discovered the pressure of juggling work and a family. All in all, women were struggling but remained determined and persistent in changing their role in the household.

Women's role was to stay home, take care of her kids, have a nice meal and a clean house for her husband. But in the 1920's family dynamics was changing. Women wouldn't just stay home and take care of the kids while the husband was at work. They would be working and supporting the family just like the husband would. Marriage was no longer 75/35, but instead a 50/50 partnership between the man and the woman.
