Netiquette is described as ways to interact with others on the internet. Examples of this include email, social media, online chat rooms, website comments, and many more! Netiquette is important so that we do not offend others, and respect people through our screens. Some core rules are to remember the human behind the screen, act online as you do in real life, share only the things you are knowledgeable about, respect other peoples privacy, be forgiving, and don't abuse the power anonymity gives you.

People are not able to hear how you mean the words you type so it is very easy to assume the worst. Children can especially believe what others are saying about them online.

Digital law is defined as the illegal use of technology. Often times, people may not know that they are violating digital law, so it is important that we stay informed. Some examples of violations of digital law are illegal file sharing, illegally downloading music, stealing someone's identity, hacking into someone's computer, just to name a few. Stealing someone's identity is potentially stealing their birth date, credit card information, or social security information. Illegal downloading of music is classified as downloading music, and not paying for it. Illegal file sharing can be illegally sharing music, or movies, as well as other files that contain private information that does not belong to you.

The netiquette lesson will make internet comments into real life scenarios. I will start by asking who uses the internet and has social media accounts. I will ask how many of them have seen, experienced cyberbullying.

Then, I will use printed bullying comments and have the students read them aloud to each other. I will then ask both the giver and receiver how making/receiving those kinds of comments made them feel. Then I would ask them what the reason could be that it is easier to make these comments online. After getting the answer "because they can't see us/ we can't see their reaction, I would ask them to remember that there is someone on the other side of the screen.

As I previously mentioned, I plan on integrating a lesson using Character Education and Netiquette. First I would use a KWL chart to see what the students know before the lesson begins. I would then read a book in which a character gets teased, more specifically Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes, and would ask the students questions along the way. We would then discuss lessons from the book as a class, and create rules for our classroom, and how we should treat our classmates. I then would talk about how their attitudes and actions could be misconstrued online, and how it is extremely important for us to use kind words on the internet, and what it can do to our friends.

It wasn't until I saw my younger cousin cry over something someone said online that I really cared. Students do not realize that they are talking to real people on the other side of the screen.

One idea for a lesson that you could have your students do is use a discussion board online to write about what they read in their independent reading books. We would look over what the students wrote on the Smart Board, and then I would provide a lesson on the Smart Board, in the form of powerpoint. I would then show some examples that i created of people not using netiquette, and we would discuss it as a class. I would pull those examples up on the Smart Board, ask if the example follows netiquette, then ask what netiquette rule it is breaking, and as a class, we would discuss the importance of using netiquette.
