 This text tells of when Mrs. Patricia Stevens, a nurse, was scared and uncomfortable, in the hospital for the birth of her twins.  Patricia didn't want to see any of her family or her friends, but she only wanted to see her dog;  In fact, Patricia managed to convince the doctor to show him her dog;  they took her to the hospital entrance and she was so happy and agitated when her dog ran towards her, wagging its tail, that she said "it's better than any medication”.

Pet power

 In recent years, more and more hospitals have found that pet hospital visits can help calm, reassure and motivate patients. Some studies show that petting animals can reduce anxiety, lower blood pressure and help patients recover faster.  Patients are sometimes happier seeing their pets than people: their dog doesn't care if they smell weird or look awful.

Impressive results

 Lea Ann Matura, an advanced practice nurse, remembers the time a pet visited its owner, a woman with lung cancer.  This patient says Lea hardly ever woke up or talked, rarely ever got out of bed and rarely ate anything, but after a visit from her dog she sat down, she seemed happier and started talking.  She was a different person.  Not all results are as impressive as Matura's, but pet visits can make a difference.  31 pet visits were observed at the Hospital for Sicilia Children in Toronto, Canada, and with this the researchers found that pet visits helped patients.

Pet visits are also allowed in the pediatric ward at Sutter medical center in Sacramento, California, because many children have a strong bond with their pets, but Amy Medovov explains that if pets can visit them on the ward, we can bring the normal daily life of the child in the hospital and we believe that this helps the child to heal better.

Breaking down the barriers
People may doubt that pets will transmit to patients, but direct hospitals have had no patients with animals.  some hospital staff may feel that visiting a pet is not a good idea.  Lea An Matura responds by saying: “I thought the doctors didn't have to agree, but all our doctors think it's a good idea.  However, it is important to have a clear policy and a list of rules or guidelines in place before pets can visit.  The success of the program can take a lot of time and effort ”.
