I have been using Mixcraft for 4 years and only recently started using Fruity Loops, I already knew the basics such as tempo, key, master and a little on mixing (e.g. making sure the track don't clip or distort). Additionally, since October 2017 I have learnt how to equalise bass well enough so it sounds smooth on the track. For example I used to cut the high frequency out completely when equalising the bass. But over time I've realised the low frequency is more powerful and has greater volume. So now instead of cutting the high frequency which would make the bass or 808s sound dull and lacking character I cut the low frequency and compress the bass well.

Whilst making this EP i've learnt new techniques in the studio. How to record an acoustic guitar and make it sound clean and crisp. I double the condenser microphones, one facing the 12th fret and the other facing the first few frets. By doing so i've noticed that this picks up wider range of frequencies from the bass to the treble. This would help me with my tracks because I'm still keeping that traditional RnB instruments like the guitar but switching it up by also using synths to give it a contemporary feel.
I have also learnt a different way of positioning the microphone for vocals. Instead of it facing the towards the artist I face it downwards to the ground so the singer is less likely to direct the plosive popping sounds into the mic.

Also little things such as not overdoing some dynamic plugins like the Multipressor which i used to and focus more on the equalising side of it. Overall i've learnt simple things make a big difference not overdoing too much with many plugins and and analysing how it sounds first. Does the vocals sound too thin? Does the vocals sound too quiet or muffled?.

My EP genres will be contemporary RnB and Afro Beats with the theme of love and heartbreak. Some artists that have already influenced my EP are Wstrn and Kojo Funds who usually rap and sing over Afro Beats. Reason I chose these two genres because they're both happy and feel good genres that are popular in the summer. Especially amongst the younger audience aged between (12 - 18).

My ambitions for the ep is for it to have as many plays and shares on all music platforms such as Soundcloud, Spotify, Itunes and Pandora, Specifically setting a target for myself which would a great challenge for myself. (3k plays and 100-150 shares).

The way I would grab listeners attention is by starting with promotion. more plays coincides with promotion. Starting off by friends helping you promote songs on Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat for example them listening to the song and recording themselves and they put it on their story.
But consistency is key for more plays and attention to the ep. So they and I need to be keep posting on social platforms. Another Way to grab my audience attention is by starting a hashtag wanting people to dance to your song and hopefully make it trend, This generation are constantly making hashtag challenges and its only right to do it for my ep.

Personally I believe the right time to get any record label attention is once I've built a buzz with promotion and I've met my target of 3k play and 100 to 150 shares. Reason for this is it gives them an impression of dedication and passion for my work to exceed by promotion, making myself a target, Research on music platforms.

For this project i will be needing male and female singers as well as male and female rappers. I'm looking for this project to have 6 tracks maximum.

The track I had difficulty in structuring is Wrong Number so i asked a friend on how to develop the song.
I structured it as...
Verse
Hook
Verse
Hook
What I was advised to do was to add little effects like delays and stutters. I took that advice on board and tweaked the main vocalists hook and I chopped the word "feeling" into a stutter sound effect, to keep the listeners interested. By doing so this gave more room for the 808s to be in the forefront because the vocals are not overlapping the instrumental. I also added a delay effect the words "Calling out to you" and "With your other boo".
The reason I specifically used delays on those phrases was because it gave this feeling or emotion of hopelessness because the person is "calling out" to their lover having their questions unanswered, contextually speaking.

Overall getting feedback from peers and teachers and working on what they've said was one of the priorities in order to improve my tracks.
I've had one main singer on my EP and I've realised there's pros and cons to collaborating with artists.

Pros
thinking outside the box and having ideas to switch
up a song and not have it just as another song.
(e.g. using delays and trying out the pitch correction)

Lyric content gave me ideas on how to set the mood and what instruments to use (e.g. Wrong Number). The soft pads and plucks gave it an ethereal feel to the song and that is what i was going for something melancholic.

Cons
Ideas might clash and both artists will have a different perspective on the instrumental.

What I could've improved on?
I should've re recorded the vocals. Some parts of the recording was a little off pitch and overall I could've recorded a better take. What I would've also changed was the way I equalised my instrumental, for example the snare I would've of cut and little on the highs and boosted a little on the low mids to mids. Also the mixing I would of put the flanger sound effects down as well as the snare.

My next EP I will use the match eq on Logic Pro X to compare it to another track like a 'About You' by Trey Songz and make it sound more wider and use the a range of frequencies (e.g. Bass Lows Mids and High) and not as clustered into one side of the eq spectrum. Also I will use the LFS meter in order to know the decibel point when distributing my EP through iTunes, Youtube and Soundcloud to prevent distortion on all music platforms.
