Inquiry Based Learning - Manga

One of my favorite examples from the reading was in regards to utilizing manga or comics as a unique form of language support for Inquiry Based Learning. I think there are a lot of different ways you can bring this style into a history classroom, and I plan on using them as much as possible. I have even, personally, read officially produced history texts made in comic-form. I plan on reading and also having students produce their own versions at least once per semester.

Structured Academic Controversy

The idea of Structured Academic Controversy would be a very useful tool to use in a history class. I am certain that in every unit, I could find a way to apply this strategy at least once. I love that it is not intended to present a right or a wrong side, but to simply help the students understand the issues. I will definitely utilize this strategy as much as possible in my classroom!

Jigsaw Method

Another strategy that would lend itself well to a history class would be the Jigsaw Method. I love the idea of breaking a larger piece of information down into more manageable pieces which would, then, be assigned to individuals in various groups. they would then, in turn, learn their piece and teach it to the group. Not only would this help them connect socially, but they would benefit from teaching to each other and from general conversations.

Service Learning

I absolutely love the idea of trying to do some valuable, hands-on Service Learning activities in my classroom. Though history may not seem like the ideal classroom for this strategy, I would actually love to connect with a local museum or historical society and see if we could physically help in taking care of historic landmarks or other things like that. I feel that if I were to look, it would probably be easy to find applicable projects. If nothing else, we could do something like setting up a sort of assembly line to mirror factories during the Industrial Revolution - and we could all make something that could be donated to the community.

Problem Based Learning

I want to try to implement Problem Based Learning as much as possible in my classroom. I feel that we could, as a classroom, break down difficult times in history and I could allow the students to discuss better ways that these things could have happened. I also want to increase my students overall autonomy by allowing them to help create some of the assignments or, at the very least, give them options for what they want to choose.
