Wonder Novel Study

As a class, we will continue reading Wonder. This novel, which focuses on how to be kind and accepting of others, is set in our contemporary culture. The story is about August Pullman, called Auggie, who has a craniofacial deformity (mandibulofacial dysostosis, also called Treacher Collins). He is starting the fifth grade at a school with other children, after being home-schooled for the last five years.

The idea for this book came to R.J. Palacio after she saw a child with a craniofacial deformity.

We will start reading this book on Monday, May 6th and finish on Wednesday, May 22nd.

STUDENT IDENTIFICATION (ID) BADGES

REMINDER: Every student ID badge includes a unique student ID number that is used to check out library books and textbooks, to purchase food items in the cafeteria, to permit passage to certain club meetings, and to provide easy identification of students in common areas of the school. Secondary students must wear their ID badges at all times during school hours, while on school property. If a student loses the ID, a replacement must be purchased promptly from the designated school office/location. Failure to follow these procedures may be considered a violation of the Discipline Management Plan and Student Code of Conduct.

5th Grade Ceremony

5^th Grade Ceremony: Our students will take center stage to receive their end-of-year certificates and celebrate their incredible accomplishments from this academic year. This ceremony is a momentous occasion where we honor their hard work, dedication, and growth throughout their time in 5th grade. While we will not announce individual students' final promotion or placement status during the ceremony, rest assured that this information will be included in their final report cards.

Date: Thursday, May 23rd
Time: 9:00 am to 10:30 am
Location: West Memorial Elementary School Gym
Guests: Each student may bring up to 4 guests.
Check-In: To help expedite the check-in process on the day of the ceremony, we encourage you to pre-register by scanning the attached QR code.
Dress Code: Since the ceremony falls during the school day, we kindly request that students come dressed in their "Sunday best." If they plan to stay at school after the ceremony, we recommend they bring a change of clothes. Please note that they are not permitted to wear a cap and gown to the ceremony, as this tradition is reserved for their high school graduation.
Dismissal: Students will be dismissed by 12:45 pm on Thursday, May 23rd, as it is an early dismissal day.
Early Check-Out: Following the clap out, you'll have the chance to check out your student early upon our return to the classroom. If you're checking your student out early, please know that they will not miss any further celebrations.
