Houses were poor and very small. People migrated from the country to the city because they wanted to work in the factories. As many people had to live in slums.

Schools were strict because of the many rules they had, there were no relationships between teacher and students. Moreover in the playground the boys and the girls were separated, sometimes by a line or another thing.

Hard-times is one of the books that portrays life in the 19th century. It is set in a fictional industrial town, called Coketown, somewhere in the north of England in mid- 1800s. the town is dirty and noisy, and the life of the people working in the factories is hard. Mr. Gradgrind, who is the local MP, represents the people of Coketown in Parliament. He has set up a school in the town and is very proud of its work.

by Reading the first chapter we can tell that school life was hard with may rules and teachers were strict, like i said before, because of that there were no relationships between teachers and students, and the book students just had a few pictures and long texts but school is quite different nowadays.
