Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was born on October 29th ,1451 and he was born in Genova, Italy. He later explored the ocean side for France in hopes of finding a trade route to India. There are many things we aren't taught about this man.
Christopher was a fraud who never set foot in America and died thinking he had made it to India.the story we all know about him was written in 1828 by Washington Irving who also wrote Sleepy hollow and many other fairy tales. He wrote many of Collumbus' accomplishments which he never actually did. Christopher didn't discover that the earth was round (It was common knowledge in his age) and thought the earth was round and thousands of miles smaller despite many more accurate maps being available. Infact he thought that his three month voyage would only take three days. He actually believed that he could get from Europe to India by boat in three days. Then when he got to the Dominican Republic (not india) he found over 250000 Tiano people already living their this never discovering any new land. He then attacked the natives with 17 armed ships and over 12000 men after they had given them hospitality and places to stay. He then enslaved the survivors while demanding gold that they never had and began to slaughter them in 1542. After all of this the Tianos population dropped to a meer 200. He then traveled the rest of the Caribbean and slaughtered over 12 more native tribes .
So why did Irvings book have such an impact? In the 19th gentry a surge of Italians came to America, only to be oppressed and scrutinized for their heritage. They wanted to prove they were apart of America's story and latched onto Columbus and his fairy tale.

And all of this wrongly got him into our history books and he is remembered as a hero for things he never did, and is never seen as the slaughtering bafoon he really was.

He was born March 9, 1454. He died February 22, 1512. He was born in Florence, Italy. He explored for Spain. Vespucci participated as observer in several voyages that explored the east coast of South America between 1499 and 1502. He sailed so he could explore the land Columbus had found. He also sailed so he could find a way to reach Asia. He sailed along the coast of South America and concluded it was a new land, not Asia. He was aboard the ship that discovered that South America extended much further South than previously thought. North and South America was named after Amerigo Vespucci. He was born to Ser Nastagio and Lisabetta Mini, which were friends of the Medici family who ruled Italy at the time. Many argue over whether Amerigo Vespucci was born in 1454 or 1451.
