The song goes through the story of a person who is heartbroken and believes that they need their partner to be strong, but soon realizes that they don't need anybody else to be strong. The lyrics, "Kept thinking I could never live without you by my side", show how the singer first felt about the situation. She eventually builds up to singing, "I grew strong" and "I will survive".
