         <description><![CDATA[<div>Date:March 3, 1820<br>What happened:On March 3,1820, congress passed a bill granting the Missouri Compromise. An imaginary is created. Any new state North of that line is FREE, any new state South of that line is a SLAVE state.<br>What caused the event:Missouri wanted to become a state in 1820. If Missouri joins, the balance will be uneven.<br>What was the effect of the event:Missouri would become a slave state. Maine would become a free state. An imaginary line is created which represents the Missouri Compromise.<br><br></div>]]></description>

Voters decided whether they wanted slavery or not. </div><div>3.Slave trade in Washington D.C. ended.</div><div>4.EVERYONE in the country had to help find runaway slaves.<br>What caused the event:California tries to become free a state which would make the balance unequal.<br>What was the effect of the event:Slave trade in Washington D.C. was prohibited, but slavery was not.</div><div>California becomes a free state.</div><div>The South gained by the strengthening of the Fugitive Slave Law</div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Date:October 18,1859<br>What happened:1.John and his sons took 5 pro-slavery men out of bed one night and killed them.</div><div>2.He attacked a federal arsenal building filled with weapons.</div><div>3.He was planning to arm slaves to start a rebellion.</div><div>4.He was caught and hung. <br>What caused the event:He was a Northern abolitionist. He attacked the federal arsenal in Harper's Ferry. He was hoping to create a rebellion against slavery by arming slaves with the weapons from the federal arsenal. He was captured during the raid and later hung. <br>What was the effect of the event:1.The North thought he was a HERO!</div><div>2.The South was outraged of how they could worship a murderer!</div><div>Which led the north and the south to be part of a great argument on the controversial figure that was john brown.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Date:March 6, 1857<br>What Happened: 1. Dred Scott was a slave that was taken from Missouri,a slave state and brought to Illinois,a free state. Then he was brought back to Missouri.</div><div>2. Dred is unaware that slavery is prohibited in Illinois, and misses his chance to escape.<br>What caused the event: Dred Scott goes to court and says he should be free!<br>What was the effect of the event:1.Scott was a slave</div><div>2.He was a slave and did not have any rights.</div><div>3.Slaves are NOT citizens</div><div>4.Slaves were owned by their masters .Masters could take slaves anywhere because they were considered PROPERTY.</div><div>5.Our government can't take away slaves since they are property.</div><div>6.This meant the government could NOT get rid of slavery.<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Date:November 6,1860<br>What Happened:In 1860, Abraham Lincoln becomes president.<br>What cause the event:1.The South feared Lincoln would end slavery.</div><div>2.Eleven Southern states secede the Union.</div><div>3.Those states were Florida,Arkansas,Texas,Louisiana,Tennessee,Alabama,Georgia,South Carolina,North Carolina,Virginia, and Mississippi.<br>What was the effect of the event:1.The seceded states formed a new union and called themselves the Confederate  States Of America.</div><div>2.They elected Jefferson Davis as their new president.</div><div>3.5 slave states stayed apart of the country. They were Missouri,Kentucky,Maryland,Delaware, and West Virginia.</div><div>4.These were called Border States.<br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Date:April 12,1861<br>What Happened:On April 12,1861 at 4:30, General Anderson fired the first shot shot on Fort Sumter.The Civil War had begun.<br>What caused the event:Fort Sumter is located in Charleston,South Carolina.It was a union fort, but it was based in the new Confederate States of America.Confederate leader Jefferson Davis demanded the fort be evacuated of Union troops.Lincoln refused.<br>What was the effect of the event:0 men died in the battle that lasted 33 hours.After the union surrendered, 2 men were injured when a cannon did not fire correctly.President Lincoln and President Davis called up troops to prepare for the war.<br><br></div>]]></description>
