The desert ecosystem is probably one of the hardest communities to survive in. Deserts are often defined as areas that receive less than 10 inches of average annual rainfall. Water is very scarce in the desert, even underground there is little to no water because of evaporation. Organisms have to be able to survive most of the time without water and have to withstand very hot conditions. Some ways that plants live are by going dormant until rain occurs. Animals usually survive if they come out only during the night to avoid the heat.

Many animals make their home in the desert, including bighorn sheep, scorpions, ostriches, kangaroo rats and camels. Certain animals are only present in specific deserts. Many animals, especially mammals and reptiles are active only at dusk and again at dawn. Some smaller desert animals go below the surface of the soil or sand to escape the high temperatures at the deserts surface. Desert creatures obtain water directly from plants, such as cactus.

If surviving the heat is not hard enough in the desert their are more dangers that are life threatening to organisms. Some dangers in the desert to organisms are other organisms such as Scorpions, poisonous spiders and snakes. Other hazards that come from the desert are sandstorms, dehydration, intense heat, mirages and fires. The only natural cause of fires in the desert are Lightning storms. Some man made causes of fires in the desert are caused from farmers who would purposefully set fires to burn off a field and strong winds would blow the fire out of control, and People driving in the desert would often drop their cigarette near bushes which can also cause a man made fire.

As there are some dangers of the desert that are naturally caused and have no solution. There are ways to prevent man made fires and other harmful actions. Some solutions to desert problems are not to go off road and stay on a selected path, be cautious about wildfires and always pack the right equipment. Even if the hot and dry weather scares people away, in its own way, the desert is beautiful and packed with very unusual organisms waiting to be discovered
