Deserts are often defined as areas that receive less than 10 inches of average annual rainfall. Water is very scarce in the desert, even underground there is little to no water because of evaporation. Certain animals are only present in specific deserts. Many animals, especially mammals and reptiles are active only at dusk and again at dawn. Some smaller desert animals go below the surface of the soil or sand to escape the high temperatures at the deserts surface. Other hazards that come from the desert are sandstorms, dehydration, intense heat, mirages and fires. The only natural cause of fires in the desert are Lightning storms. There are ways to prevent man made fires and other harmful actions. Some solutions to desert problems are not to go off road and stay on a selected path, be cautious about wildfires and always pack the right equipment.
