         <description><![CDATA[<p>Wegener was a German meteorologist, geophysicist and polar researcher. In 1915 he published ‘<strong>The Origin of Continents and</strong> <strong>Oceans</strong>’, which outlined his theory of <a rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.geolsoc.org.uk/Plate-Tectonics/Glossary/A-C#drift"><strong>Continental Drift</strong></a>.</p><p><br></p><p>Wegener was a member of four expeditions to Greenland. In 1930 he visited Greenland for the last time, where he died shortly after his fiftieth birthday.</p><p><br></p><p>Wegener’s theory of Continental Drift was met with scepticism by many scientists. Although he had a lot of evidence to support the theory, he could not explain how the plates moved. It would be almost half a century before this problem began to be solved.</p>]]></description>

         <title>CONTINENTAL DRIFT</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Alfred Wegener's curiosity toward the possibility of continental drift came in 1910 after <strong>he noticed how Earth's continents resembled pieces of a jigsaw puzzle</strong>. For example, he noted how South America coast correctly lined up with the coast of Northwest Africa. </p><p><br></p><p><mark>at one point in time, all of the continents were joined together as one large mass of land, then the land spread apart and drifted into their current positions.</mark></p><p><br></p><p>Continental drift describes one of the earliest ways geologists thought continents moved over time. This map displays an early "supercontinent," Gondwana, which eventually moved to form the continents we know today. Fossils of similar organisms across widely disparate continents encouraged the revolutionary theory of continental drift.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<p><strong>Wegener found fossil evidence that the continents were once joined</strong>. The same type of plant and animal fossils are found on continents that are now widely separated. Wegener suggested that when the organisms were alive, the lands were joined and the organisms were living side-by-side.</p>]]></description>

         <title>GLASSOPTERIS </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The iconic Glossopteris flora from Antarctica was discovered and collected by <strong>Robert Falcon Scott</strong> and his party near the Beardmore Glacier in the Transantarctic Mountain during their ill-fated return trip from the South Pole in January 1912 before they perished.</p><p><br></p><p>During the first half of the 20th century, geologist Eduard Suess discovered that fossils of the extinct seed fern Glossopteris could be found on three different continents. This led him to believe that, <strong>at one time, the continents had formed one gigantic supercontinent, and later drifted apart</strong>.</p><p><br></p><p>Glossopteris was the most common genus of an extinct family of seed-bearing, or flowerless, plants collectively called Glossopteridales. The genus name means '<strong>tongue fern</strong>,' a reference to the shape and general appearance of its leaves. Fossilized Glosopteris.</p><p><br></p>]]></description>
