The cost of college is a investment for most families. The typical student looking to get a higher education has to take out private, federal or both loans to be able to attend. In low income families this makes college not an option. Recent graduates are coming out of college with loads of amounts of debt they are unable to pay off, which puts them in financial burden.

" The economic uncertainty motivating the question of 'worth' also undermines composition's traditional resilience on the redistributive function of higher education, as high debt burden and uncertain employment weaken the narrative of social mobility through education"(Bollig 151)

Many students who go to college know the career they want to pursue upon graduation. This helps, but is not always necessary for finding a high paying job. Students who receive a college degree are paid more than those who don't. This can eliminate the stress and burden felt by students paying off the debt. When they are in a high salary paying job, they are able to pay the student loans off quicker.

"Here are just a few reasons to believe in the value of a college degree: Higher salaries, employment rates and greater job satisfaction" (Is College Still Worth It?).

Most jobs are now requiring a college degree to be hired. Jobs use college admissions/ where you went to college as a way to see how well rounded people are and the level of schooling they have. Having a college degree in a field that you are interested in will most likely secure you a job. Not have a college degree puts you in jeopardy of being unemployed or having a job at a lower salary rate.

Going to college teaches you many things that are important for the future and general life skills that may not be learned if you don't go to college. When students are away from their parents for the first time they have to learn independence and structure which are the most important things in life and are good to experience at a young age. College also teaches essential communication skills that are not taught in high school. It prepares you that you need to speak up and advocate for yourself in order to receive what you want or need. Responsibility and accountability are also gained and taught in college because you choose what is going to happen to you or the outcome of something you can control. Learning these skills without parents to hover over is essential or development

Connecting with people in the community can take you a long way after graduation. Networking with professors, councilors, and advisors can set you up for success upon graduation. Many people in the community know each other which can help you find different jobs or opportunities. Going to things like conferences also helps you gain more knowledge while meeting people in the same field or who are interested in the same thing. Networking and gaining relationships creates a broad spectrum of people to talk to and people where the trust is mutual.

The main reason is they have a job but are't using their degree. In this case they went to college for no reason and are in debt for something they are not using. A lot of times when this happens the job they choose does not require a college degree. The student is now in debt for something that they don't need to be in debt for.
