What methods were used when you learned a second language? How effective were they?

In the olden days...I learnt from text books with very little speaking in the classroom. I loved language and was frustrated by this. Even at university there was only one lecture given in French. As a result my reading writing and grammar were excellent but speaking and listening were not as good. In later years I lived in France for a while to improve my French speaking so I had a little immersion learning.Things have changed a lot now and there are many opportunities available to improve in all areas of language learning (and pedagogy has improved!).

Not a natural but I love languages

I wouldn't say that I'm a natural linguist. I love words, the sound of them, the etymology, the rules around them and find grammar genuinely interesting. I believe this passion saw me continuing with languages year after year and I got better at Spanish. The more I learned about spanish-speaking cultures, the more I wanted to explore it.

This eventually led to reading Hispanic studies at university where learning Portuguese was a requirement. Because this was forced upon me and similar to Spanish but different, I resented learning it. For some reason I didn't love learning Portuguese grammar the way I'd loved spanish in high school. Perhaps because it was challenging. It wasn't until I studied abroad in Portugal in my 3rd year that I began to love it. The language had become communicative and had meaning. In my final year at university my Portuguese language grades surpassed my Spanish grades. This was thanks to the immersive experience of living abroad.

I went onto study translation which I loved as it meant delving into the meaning behind the words again and solving grammatical problems. But it is something I will always have to work hard at, especially now that I haven't used either language in 8 years!
