norms provide a consistency for teammates but self-discipline is a learned trait and it often means putting off your immediate comfort or wishes in favor of longterm success. Research says that middle school students are in a moral gap. It takes their leaders and mentors to show them appropriate behavior systems for the individual to thrive, but also the team as a unit. I practice routines with my students daily. We practice how we play.

The safety of everyone in the building is paramount. Everyone needs to know the expectations, rules, and the consequences. Parents expect discipline, and really so do kids. I think kids really like rules so at school they can feel safe and protected and not just a body. Rules are also practice for life. In life rules are called laws, and if you can't practice at school following rules, then in life you will be defiant and after several brushes with law, you will become a property of the state and have a life of ugly rules and situations where no one will care about what happens to you. You will be sorry that you didn't listen to your Parents/Teacher or learn from mistakes of family members. So we need to teach our kids to take the road less traveled, follow rules and laws and have a peaceful loving life.
School is practice for real life.

It's important to have a behavior system in place in order to reward those that are following the expectations and to correct those that are not. For example, a student who displays respect and safety awareness when walking down a hall can get positive feedback/consequence from a teacher. A student who is running down the hall can display disrespect to those around them and cause safety issues which will lead to negative feedback/consequence. The proper behavior will prepare the students for high school and being a part of a community (when visiting public places).
