         <description><![CDATA[<div>Pythagoras of Samos&nbsp; was an ancient Ionian Greek Philosopher. His ideas influenced the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and through them, Western philosophy. <br>Pythagoras was credited with many mathematical and scientific discoveries, including the Pythagorean theorem, Pythagorean tuning, the five regular solids, the Theory of Proportions, the sphericity of the Earth, and the identity of the morning anf evening stars as the planet Venus.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Aristotle was a Greek philosopher and polymath during the Classical period of Ancient Greece. He was born in the city of Stagira in Northern Greece. Taught by Plato, he was the founder of the Lyceum, the Peripatetic school of<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripatetic_school"> </a>philosophy. Shortly after Plato died, Aristotle left Athens and, at the request of Phillip II of Macedon, tutored Alexander the Great beginning in 343 BC. His writings cover many subjects including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theatre, music, rhetoric, psychology, linguistics, economics, politics, and government. As a result, his philosophy has exerted a unique influence on almost every form of knowledge in the West and it continues to be a subject of contemporary philosophical discussion.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Euclid of Alexandria was a Greek mathematician, often referred to as the "founder of geometry" or the "father of geometry". His <em>Elements</em> is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook for teaching mathematics (especially geometry) from the time of its publication until the late 19th or early 20th century. In the <em>Elements</em>, Euclid deduced the theorems of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a small set of axioms.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Archimedes (287-212 BC)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Archimedes of Syracuse was a Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Considered to be the greatest mathematician of ancient history, and one of the greatest of all time, Archimedes anticipated modern calculus and analysis and proved a range of geometrical theorems, including the area of a circle, the surface area, and the volume of a sphere. He was also one of the first to apply mathematics to physical phenomena, including an explanation of the principle of the lever. He is credited with designing innovative machines, such as his screw pump, compound pulleys, and defensive war machines to protect his native Syracuse from invasion. He died during the Siege of Syracuse, where he was killed by a Roman soldier despite orders that he should not be harmed. Cicero describes visiting the tomb of Archimedes, which was surmounted by a sphere and a cylinder, which Archimedes had requested be placed on his tomb to represent his mathematical discoveries.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Hypatia (350-415)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hypatia was a Hellenistic Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician, who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, then part of the Eastern Roman Empire. She is the first female mathematician whose life is reasonably well recorded. Hypatia was renowned in her own lifetime as a great teacher and a wise counselor.&nbsp;</div><div>Hypatia is known to have constructed astrolabes and hydrometers, but did not invent either of these, which were both in use long before.<br>In the twentieth century, Hypatia became seen as an icon for women's rights and a precursor to the feminist movement.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Anastasios Christomanos (1841-1906)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Anastasios Christomanos was the founder of the science of chemistry in Greece. He was born in Vienna in 1841, and studied in Austria and Germany. After graduation he worked in factories, as a chemist. He taught chemisrty at the University of Athens until 1906. </div><div>In 1906 the Stockholm Amademy invited him to run for the Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, death overtook him.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Constantin Carathéodory (1873-1950)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Constantin Carathéodory was born in 1873 in Berlin to Greek parents and grew up in Brussels. He studied engineering in Belgium at the Royal Military Academy,&nbsp; where he was considered a charismatic and brilliant student. He lived and worked primarily in Germany, where, as a polymath, was involved with physics, languages, engineering, archeology, politics and most importantly mathematics. He is the only Greek to have been awarded the title of Member of the German Academy of Sciences to date. Caratheodory is known to have been the mentor and teacher of Nobel-prize winning physicist Albert Einstein, according to Einstein’s own statements. Caratheodory achieved worldwide eminence in the field of mathematics and physics, except in Greece.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Georgios Papanikolaou (1883-1962)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Georgios Papanikolaou is known for his invention of the Papanicolaou test, commonly known as the Pap smear or Pap test, which is used worldwide for the detection and prevention of cervical cancer and other cytologic diseases of the female reproductive system. Born in Kymi, Greece, on 13 May 1883 Papanikolaou attended the University of Athens where he studied literature, philosophy, languages, and music. In 1913, he emigrated to the United States and worked at the New York Hospital and at the Cornell<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornell_Medical_College"> </a>Medical College. <br>He received the Albert Lasker Award for Clinical Medical Research in 1950. In 1961, he moved to Miami, Florida, to develop the&nbsp; Papanikolaou<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Papanicolaou_Cancer_Research_Institute&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1"> </a>Cancer Research Institute at the University in Miami, but died there on 19 February 1962 prior to its opening.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Nicholas Mitropoulos was a Greek - American physicist held in great esteem and was recruited by Robert Oppenheimer himself to work on the Manhattan project and develop the nuclear bomb. Before the war, he had cooperated with famous scientists such as Enrico Fermi.&nbsp;<br>Mitropoulos along with other scientists is also credited with the discovery of the Monte-Carlo method, simulated annealing, and the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. He was a professor at the University of Chicago and a researcher at the Los Alamos research institute in New-Mexico. He won many prestigious awards such as the award of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Fotis Kafatos (1940-2017)</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Fotis Kafatos&nbsp; was a Greek biologist. He graduated from the Cornell University and he earned his PhD at Harvard for research on entomology. <br>At the beginning of his career, he contributed to the development of the complementary DNA cloning technology and worked on the mechanisms of cellular differentiation leading to the formation of the eggs in insects. <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fotis_Kafatos#cite_note-moz2-18"><sup><br></sup></a>He was an influential Greek biologist, having had a pivotal role in triggering the interest of the Greek government for Science, with the establishment of the Faculty of Biology in the University of Athens, the Faculty of Biology in the University of Crete, and the IMBB in Heraklion.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Dimitri Nanopoulos is a Greek physicist.&nbsp; He studied Physics at the University of Athens and he obtained his Ph.D in High Energy Physica from the University of Sussex. He has been a Research Fellow at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1989, he was elected Professor at the Department of Physics, at the NASA-supported Texas A&amp;M University. He has made several contributions to particle physics and cosmology. He has written over 645 original papers, including 14 books. He has over 42,500 citations, placing him as the fourth most cited High Energy Physicist of all time.</div>]]></description>

He was born in Heraklion, Crete and studied Electrical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, and Computer Science at the University of Grenoble under a French scholarship. Professor Sifakis lives in France and works for the Centre National de la Reserche Scientifique at the VERIMAG laboratory near Grenoble, of which he is a founder.<br><br></div>]]></description>
