Whilst I acknowledge that disruptive aspects are likely to occur with any technology advancement, overall, the IoT and future progressions is likely to be a force for good, especially when used in the right way. The IoT enables greater efficiency within different industries as well as within general life. For example, within the healthcare industry, the IoT will enable more data driven health experiences and also remote monitoring systems. Within everyday life, IoT technologies such as smart home devices can improve efficiency and convenience because it can be used to automate routine tasks and enhance home security.

Additionally, this website article https://www.saft.com/energizing-iot/how-iot-world-shaping-2021-and-what-trends-will-influence-future-iot-infographic/ highlights that during the pandemic, the IoT was used for the right thing, connecting people and enabling businesses to still operate at remote locations, therefore it could be argued that if used in the right way, the IoT can be a force for good.

Journal articles and content within the lecture has shown how powerful the IoT can be and potentially be in the future. Therefore, when used in the wrong way, or differently to what it was intended, it could be very dangerous in my own opinion. IoT technologies raise questions about mass surveillance, data collection practices, and the potential for individuals and large organisations to abuse the power of these technologies and uses them in the wrong way. Therefore, without proper policies in place which help to ensure that the IoT is used in a positive and beneficial way, IoT could pose a threat to individuals.

I agree with this statement as whilst there are clear privacy issues with IoT, with correct implementation and use it can be a force for good in society. On the positive side, IoT has the potential to revolutionise sectors like healthcare and transportation, offering efficiency gains and improved quality of life. Enhanced connectivity and innovation can also result. However, concerns arise from privacy and security issues, as poorly secured IoT devices may lead to data breaches and unauthorised access. There's also the risk of malicious exploitation, raising questions about surveillance and system disruption. Striking a balance between the benefits and risks of IoT is crucial for ensuring it becomes a positive force for society.

I think IoT could definitely be used for good such as making disabled peoples lives easier but i think we can clearly see that the focus of IoT isn't on that. Instead companies are flooding anything and everything with IoT capabilities, whereas they should be pausing to ask if its needed or not (most of the time its not!). I think big companies (such as Nike, McDonalds) will definitely use IoT to get rid of any jobs possible as these big companies just care about making a profit. I hope the right people do use IoT to create beneficial devices however, currently, there seems to be more waste as companies desperately try to create the next big thing.

I agree with the idea that the Internet of Things (IoT) can have positive or negative effects, depending on how and why it is used. IoT has the potential to provide many benefits, such as improving energy efficiency, optimizing the management of different processes, making everyday life easier through automation, and improving healthcare with health devices. However, it also poses significant risks to data security and privacy. Therefore, the positive or negative impact of the IoT will largely depend on the measures taken to mitigate these risks, as well as the intentions of those who develop and use these technologies.

In geography, IoT has the potential to greatly improve environmental monitoring, urban planning, and disaster management by providing real-time data, which can lead to more informed decision-making and greater sustainability. However, the risks of misuse—such as privacy concerns, data exploitation, and unequal access to technology—must also be acknowledged. The key will be ensuring that IoT is used ethically, with careful consideration of its social and environmental impacts, to truly benefit both people and the planet.

The way we use IoT—particularly in terms of data privacy, security, and global control over resources—will determine whether it has a positive or negative impact. Without proper regulation, the IoT could exacerbate inequalities, invade privacy, and even lead to geopolitical tensions as nations compete for technological dominance.

IoT - Meant for good in a bad world?

Whilst I mostly agree that, like with every technology, there is potential for both good and evil, the hands in which they are placed is of greater importance. It is the common case that throughout history, technology was being developed to help humanity by automating tasks or simply making them more efficient. This is, in an ideal world, all that technology should be used for, for the greater good of humanity. However, as technology matures, so does its users, and as humanity has experienced, advancements in technology have opened up the doors to perform many evil and malicious activities. I would therefore make the claim that, though having the potential to serve humanity for the greater good, the IoT will inevitably be exploited by powerful individuals to serve their selfish purposes. So what does this mean? It means humanity must not only know HOW to use the IoT, but understand the potential implications of such devices in our day to day lives, and know how to avoid being exploited through such technology.

It may be semantical, but the statement does preface "depending on how and why it is used", hence I find it hard to disagree with the statement. Of course the iot can have a good influence on humanity, and it can have a bad influence, but this largely depends on how the technology is used. Such devices are obviously a treasure trove of data, which can raise concerns about one's privacy, however arguments can made about the benefit such data collection can have on users. For example, targeted advertising may be creepy in many cases, but it can also help inform consumers about additional options available for certain products.

Ultimately the impact of the internet of things will be determined by the user base (how many people are exposed to it), and the providers of the technology (and their intentions behind their inventions).

A lot of the bad things that can be used with IOT are largely a result of a lack of policies and laws on IOT.
