My Professional "Take Away"

My biggest take away from the resources is something that I hadn't considered before: the amount of clients and potential to loose meaning due to an inability to remember individuals and sessions. In Counselor Self-Care, Julius explains that he maintained "a caseload of 30-40 clients" (Corey, 2018), and in my experience with CPS is a lot. Because of this, there is potential to not get as close with each client as the counselor is seeing so many and loose the ability to connect with each person as each session would be like the first on. Of course the client may not see this, but as a counselor I would feel detached from clients and question whether I am being an effective counselor as I would not feel as though I were connecting with clients, potentially leading to self doubt and burnout.

In the same book, Julius discussed that his way of self care is focusing on specific aspects of self-care: "family, fitness, and reading" (Corey, 2018). These are three things that I already want to do better in general for my mental health, and believe that incorporating these in my weekly routing will drastically benefit my self-care routine.

I use a planner on a daily basis for work and school to help prepare myself for upcoming events, deadlines, and due dates. I include personal self-care activities and goals in this to help myself remember to put myself first, as I cannot do my job or school properly unless I am taken care of first. I typically include things like 'date-night dinner' and 'walk the dog', however I believe I need to create time to go on a run or to the gym and read. If I can create the time in my planner, then I can stick to it each week.
