I had played violin before in the past but I had to stop due to multiple reasons but just this summer I got one. I was anyways going to start playing in japan so I decided why not do it in school as it would be hard to try and learn two new instruments at the same time as time would need to be dedicated to both. But in general I decided wanted to play violin when at my old school a professional solo violinist came to perform. I loved how it sounded, how it could be slow and melodic or fast and excited in a frenzy, how it could sound loud and imposing or gentle and quiet. The violin had so much variety to offer and could sound beautiful no matter how. Thats when I decided I wanted to be able to play like that too.

A classic electric key board was chosen for its clear tone which is spaced out giving a feeling of emptiness while a faster paced organ is in the background giving a haunting feeling. The electric piano main melody has a high and low pitch to give a echoing feeling. The high pith has its own organ background melody as does the lower one. Its quite dense but the ones in the background are quiet to give a feeling of something mysterious lurking in the background.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-YuSSc6I_kAc_-BZckooPUrC3MhCjcrj/view?usp=sharing

Instrument's:
- Recorder
- clarinet
- oboe
- Drums
- Bass

Reasoning-
When listing you realize that some form of wind instrument is being included that is not the recorder as it is far to deep and you can hear air echoing with that instrument which you don't hear with recorders, making me believe perhaps it is a oboe or something else. The recorder is high and a bit whiny(?) and is easy to hear while another wind instrument that isn't as low as the first but not as high as the recorder comes in which could be a clarinet. All the while drums and bass provide a steady beat in the background as the music picks up.

Why chosen:
- clarinet
Together with the recorder it makes the high pitch sound less jarring and it also carries that higher wind sound without being too quite or having a squeaky tone along with it
- oboe\unknown
It gives off the feeling of emptiness and space with the echo it has
- Drums
First in the beginning its like the quiet rattle of sand later then it becomes a steady rhythm that indicates a faster tempo, its always there in the background and reminding me of hurried foot steps
- Bass
Gives the drums duality later on so that the foot steps and sand sounds are distinguishable
- Recorder
Indicates shift to faster tempo, goes along with the clarinet to give a feeling of wind rushing past so you hear the high pitched whishh sound
Pitch:
Over all low, though some higher pitched instruments are included

Intervals:
the notes are narrow to each other with small pauses before a new set of notes

Tempo:
From slow to faster

I choose the sounds "Nice dream clay" and "flying circus piano" because they have an echo to them giving the song a haunting or mysterious quality. And Scooby doo is in a mystery series after all. The notes I choose are close to each-other to mimic the sound of foot steps, a sound often played when he and the others are investigating. But at its core Scooby doo is a comedic character which is why the notes later on get smaller gaps and go in an acending and decending scale to make it light -hearted and funny.

The file was too big and I didn't know how to upload it without having to pay so I decided to ask Mr. David on wendsday. So I can say this was done before wendsday nov. 1st. But for my warm-up I practiced switching strings because sometimes I hit other strings while transitioning. After that I practiced jingle bells. I think I practiced for roughly an hour.

I dont know exactly when I filmed this but I believe it was after the previous journal entry and defiantly after pullout lessons on tuesday oct. 31st (as I practiced mary had a little lamb which was given to me at pullout). The reason I didnt post this one directly on to padlet was because I was lazy and I wanted to post it later. As a warm-up I practiced jingle bells but my main practice was mary had a little lamb. I also learned how to read g-string notes (although very slowly).

I focused on the violin and played for 40 minuets.

Please ignore the first 10 seconds of the video.

I practiced for an hour or more and I tried playing jingle bells but faster on the violin. This was on Saturday nov. 4th. I made some pretty big mistakes and one of them was not warming up before-hand. Another on was how even though I practiced my bow would still hit other strings because I was going at a speed to fast for me. One more down-side of trying to peed-up was how the bow vibrated when I played which was unpleasant. I would also not be able to hold notes for the beats needed or they wouldn't sound nice as I skimmed over them. My bow posture was also bad so it skidded across the violin at times making scratchy noises. Not all of these will show in the video but I made multiple recordings and the other mistakes show up in those.

To make it short, I should not have played faster then I was capable of.

I choose the series Scooby doo and my character is Scooby doo.

Unlike the first written leitmotif, it relies less on descending scales to show the comedy aspect of Scooby doo and more on interrupting\different and strange sounds. It also involves a wider variety of sounds making it more diverse and interesting. But like the first one it has an echoing quality whenever the electric sounds are used.

I started off by creating a very typical spooky vibe by having a low organ continuously play out with a high pitched rhythm and a low melody play the loudest. The melody signifies the monsters approaching as it's not too fast and low giving it a haunting vibe like somethings lurking and waiting. The high pitched rhythm should copy that of a frantic beating heart adding anxiety and tension as it foreshadows there's something to be nervous about. Lastly the one note low organ plays until the moment shaggy sees monsters are behind him creating suprise through the sudden silence.

A common characteristic of Scooby doo is being the comedic character but as he is a dog it's often physical. The physical comedy is always at its peak in chase sequence's which is why the music becomes more light hearted as soon as the chasing begins. It goes from a lower note low to a high one giving off positive feelings. The speed of it makes it less serious as the "something is lurking" sensation goes away. Before when the music was more spooky it had three low notes in a row being interrupted by an eerie single high one and instead of getting any closure by going down a note, it replays the first note and a jarring contrast is made by repeating the sequence. Now however three of the same notes are played in a row making it neutral. It also keeps the frighting vibe (being a call back of the previous notes) but it the context of the scene makes is comedic. The scratchy violin noises sound unpleasant, but it's an over-exaggerated version how sliding across the floor would sound like highlighting the visual comedy of them failing to run away. After that the chase sequence mostly relies on violin recordings to mark when certain actions (Stopping, Entering and exiting tents) occur. Only having violin recordings before hand should help add to the suddenness when the monster turns around and the electric bass\piano\organ sounds are heard.

That day i Left my whole new world sheet at school so i experimented around a bit with other pieces i had. I think i practiced for more than an hour at least to cover all the pieces. For a warm-up i played geels row which was nice because it reminded me to slow my bowling down when i played. After that i used some time to go over jingle bells again and once i was happy with that i decided to spend most of my time to practice Hedwigs theme from harry potter. Lastly i decided to try a song to which the name i dont know of (title is in korean) but didn’t practice that one much. I need to improve on putting my violin higher on my shoulders and keeping the bow more stable.

However the group in general played pretty well together.

Personally I felt like I didn't play that good. For example once I started my part too late or I would get lost with what note to play as I was listening to the others playing. I defiantly could have done better by practicing the part more while listing to the track. My mind was numb the entire time except when I started too late and I thought "I messed up" and I panicked which resulted in me playing the notes wrong which caused me to panic more and I kinda just blanked after that. I was mildly happy however that i never stopped playing in my confusion as that would have looked 100 times worse to the audience.

I am quite proud of the recording. It is defiantly one of the better recordings and has come far from where I started. I think the sound is much more smoother than the other ones. The Two grenadiers was fine, I still make the same mistake, I play more than 3 or the 3 notes in a row at the wrong speed, in the same part and will work on that next time.

I think the most important ATL skill to use when practicing in a small band is communication. Because often a band can only sound harmonious when all members talk with each other and ensure that everyone is playing the part necessary for the song or if needed an adjustment can be made to make the song sound better only when communicated clearly. The skill I need to work on the most are my self management skills because I often do not practice the chords because it can feel tedious to practice 4 notes over and over again and focus on other things. I should manage my time better by splitting my time equally between personal songs\projects and the dancing queen chords.

I tried to play the song more strong in the beginning but it makes it sound more scratchy and I hit other strings as I am not careful when trying to make a more harsh sound. I will continue to practice it in order to remove the errors that I make while playing the song.

Our song is "Dancing Queen" by ABBA and I am playing the Violin. I have been using online resources which show what chords to play. I have been struggling to find out out how long to play each note, it was fixed as we agreed we would follow Gayle's count, so each time she would breathe I would take that as a sign to switch notes. I think a struggle we face as a band is that we need to learn all the chords together and since we have limited class time in music we cant make much progession.

We did not change the length of the song yet but I think we are considering to shorten it as we take a while to progress on the chords of the song so we probably wont be able to complete the whole song. To match our skill level, we (people who play chords) only play chords we can, if they are to difficult to transition to or are our of our capabilities we give them to someone who can play that chord. A challenge we encountered was the pace at which we are able to learn the song, especially with the chords as we all need to be present to progress on them and agree on them together which means progress is extremely slow. We experimented by adding a base line by having the Clarinet Player play the Base Clarinet.

I also found a old violin book with Disney songs in it and since I wanted to start a new piece anyway I decided it would be easier to take a piece from the book as its not blurry, has no water marks and no copy right infringements. I choose Can you feel the love tonight, because it was the easiest. What i need to improve on is the Rhythm and bowing movements.

The song "Dancing Queen" by ABBA is a disco song released in 1976. The song is about being young and care free as you enjoy the art of dancing. The cover most similar the original is ‘Dancing Queen 2021’ (ABBA) Cover by The HSCC as it doesn't change much, it has an electrical piano and three singers and the rest is more or less the same. The one most different to the original is Abba - Dancing queen (Metal Cover) Gabe mercedes as it uses an electrical guitar for the melody and the vocals are sung more aggressively as they scream.

1) A personal success I would like to note is how I didn't get lost while playing the song and finished in time. Another personal success is that I adjusted the volume of the violin according to the piano as Gumi is playing the melody and it was important that is was heard clearly. But looking at the recording I think I could have played a bit louder and it would still be fine.

2) A group success is that we all finished on time and payed attention to one another making sure that all instruments were heard.

3) I think we collaborated well as when ever we needed to practice we would arrange time for one another. Something we could improve on is I think one thing we could have improved on is communication with the chords as we only looked at the pianist chords at the very end (2 classes before performance I think) and we needed to change some things which was a bit inconvenient.

4) Next time I think we should not only play chords, we could play some parts of the melody as well to make it more fun to practice and to fully utilize the diverse set of instruments we have.
