“I gave the people behind the social media too much power. Cause I mean that’s what Instagram’s all about, how many likes you get. And that literally controls the power of your picture.” (Emma Crockett)

Social media can control your mindset and your time. Instagram, for example, displays how many followers you have and how many likes you have accumulated. When I find out that I haven't gotten as many likes or followers as others, that makes me feel unaccomplished and unpopular. It is very controlling and time consuming, and can alter our perception of the world.

“On social media, you can edit yourself to who you want to be. Meanwhile, in person, you’re stuck with who you really are. It’s a constant battle that everyone faces whether they admit it or not.” (Humza Deas)

On social media, you display yourself at its best; as something you may not be. Sometimes people edit their photos to look good. People do this to feel significant and show their "perfect" lives. But the reality is, we all struggle with our lives, but they are just covered up by lies and edits. I find myself constantly changing between myself in real life and the person I display myself as in the online world.

I follow celebrities, and funny meme accounts. I also follow people who I know and who request to follow me. I generally look at their profile before following them. I follow people when their profile includes "UTS", or some of my friends are following them. Sometimes I find accounts by old men requesting to follow me, trying to find a partner. I block those accounts. I have also unfollowed several accounts that post material too often that spammed my feed.

I have thought of deleting my account, due to the fact that my screen time on Instagram has been rising recently. The platform is addictive, and sometimes I cannot focus on schoolwork. I have not deleted my account. However, I have deleted a post. When I was new to Instagram, I uploaded two posts about my mom's birthday. After a while, I realized that it was awkward. I ended up deleting one of the posts.

What is the future for social media / social media culture? In what ways might it grow healthier / more useful? More dangerous / less relevant? Make some predictions and explain.

I think that social media will expand to reach more people. Businesses and music industries are already using social media platforms to market their products and get more fame by setting up accounts and adds. Social media will rise in popularity because so many people are addicted, which interests others to try it out, and the cycle continues. However, more people on the platform will also make the platform more dangerous, as it means more cyber bullying and stalking.

There is a lot of news regarding the situations in America on Instagram. Terrible, racist actions are being directed towards black people, to the point where police officers are murdering people because of their skin colour. America is an extremely developed country and the fact that people are still protesting about racism is terrible. The police force in America have not been cooperating at all, and instead of admitting to their mistakes, they have been killing and injuring innocent people.

https://globalnews.ca/news/7024818/george-floyd-protests-peaceful-charges/
