Understanding Hearing- Cochlear Implantation

A cochlear implant is a medical device that mimics the natural hearing function of the inner ear. These implants bypass the damaged part of the inner ear and send electrical signals directly to the hearing nerve to enable you or your child to hear. Since cochlear implants stimulate the hearing nerve directly, sound can be heard more clearly than what some people experience with hearing aids.

The scientists should work further to overcome the limitations such as when many people speak at once, initial improvements are revised by using cochlear implants in both ears.

Moreover, a major improvement would ensue if spacial hearing could be restored. since our ears are located few centimeters apart, sound waves from a given source generally reach 1 ear before the other. New strategies need to be developed to achieve this perfect interplay.

Furthermore, many ideas for the cochlear implant can be tested significantly faster using computer testing processes. then only the most promising processes need to be evaluated on cumbersome patient trials.

The rapid application of cochlear implant technology for patients with severe to profound hearing losses is creating critical problems. It is being hampered by inadequate reimbursement. There is a critical shortage of cochlear implant trained audiologists who are an essential keystone in the application of this technology. These audiologists are required to provide lifelong audiological services to patients who have received cochlear implants. At the same time, they have to evaluate the exponentially growing number of new candidates.

The keystone to the delivery of cochlear implant services is the audiologist. The audiologist is the sole member of the team that has to provide ongoing, life long, cochlear implant-related services to both children and adults. Herein lays a critical problem—there is a paucity of CI-trained audiologist available to provide the essential services this burgeoning field requires. For a Cochlear Implant Center to function, these skilled specialists must be available.

The restoration of hearing with cochlear implants provides an enormous educational and societal benefit. However, the existing health delivery system limits the application of cochlear implant technology. University Audiological training programs must expand their curriculum to include cochlear implant-related courses. The existing rehabilitation audiologist delivery system could be applied to provide long term, community based cochlear implant services.

Another competing force for audiologists is the manufacturers of cochlear implant. Using financial incentives, they seek to recruit talented, experienced CI audiologists from Centers to work as their field representatives whose responsibilities are to support the development of new implant centers and to trouble shoot problematic patients. In recent years, the number of cochlear implant centers has multiplied thus further increasing the need for cochlear implant-trained audiologists. Additionally, it is not unheard of for one Center to raid the talents from another Center creating a void that is extremely difficult to fill.
