1. Anglicist: This term can have different meanings depending on the context. In general, an Anglicist is someone who studies or promotes the English language, literature, or culture. In a historical context, Anglicists were a group of British colonial officials and educators in 19th-century India who advocated for the use of English as the medium of instruction in schools, rather than local languages like Sanskrit or Persian.

2. Orientalist: An Orientalist is someone who studies the languages, cultures, histories, and societies of the "Orient" or Eastern world, particularly Asia and the Middle East. Orientalism has a complex and sometimes controversial history, as it has been associated with colonialism, imperialism, and stereotyping. However, modern Orientalism encompasses a broader range of disciplines, including area studies, linguistics, anthropology, and cultural studies.

Thomas Babington Macaulay's education policy, famously encapsulated in his "Minute on Indian Education" in 1835, significantly influenced the educational landscape of colonial India. Macaulay argued for the promotion of English as the medium of instruction over traditional languages such as Sanskrit, Arabic, and Persian. He believed that English education would create a class of Indians who were "English in taste, in opinions, in morals, and in intellect," serving as intermediaries between the British rulers and the Indian masses.

Macaulay's policy, which became formalized through the English Education Act of 1835, marked a shift towards Western education and prioritized European literature and science over indigenous knowledge systems. His approach was rooted in the belief that European knowledge was superior and more useful for India's progress.

The policy was contentious, facing opposition from Orientalists who valued India's classical languages and literature. Nonetheless, Macaulay's vision prevailed, and English became the language of administration and higher education in India. This shift had long-lasting impacts, contributing to the rise of a Western-educated Indian elite and shaping the modern Indian education system.

While Macaulay's policies facilitated access to Western scientific and literary knowledge, they also marginalized traditional Indian education systems and languages, which some argue has led to cultural and intellectual dependency on the West .
