3. In 1664 The Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to The English troops. The terms of the surrender permitted Dutch residents to remain in the colony and allowed religious freedom. The English promptly renamed the city to New York. The transfer was confirmed in 1667 by the Treaty of Breda wich concluded the Second Anglo-Dutch war.
