At first, Hurston leads the reader to believe that good things will come from this place. Janie marries Jody and they build and rule the town together. However, this is the place where Janie loses her innocence and was exposed to corruption and the evils of life.
Although Janie doesn't actually get to rule Eatonville alongside her husband, the mayor, she has a title and money. When she leaves Eatonville and her entire life behind to go live with Tea Cake, she is giving herself an opportunity to live her life to the fullest and worry about nothing but love. The Everglades is a beautiful, rich, fertile land. Its people are part of the lower class and work hard to make a living, but Janie enjoys living there. In the beginning of the novel, Janie is an innocent young woman living in her rural hometown. She finds tranquility and happiness in nature. It is also worthwhile to note that she is poor and belongs in the lower class, but it doesn't really matter to her.
