A very challenging behaviour of children that can disrupt a class in my opinion, would be children who can escalate into violent behaviour when something has created a negative emotional response for them, or a behavioural trigger. This may put other students in harms way emotionally and physically, creating an un-safe learning environment.
Typically this reaction may be due to early childhood trauma that relates to violence.
Because of this, unless the escalating child has been able to move into a space they feel safe before reaching violence, it can be difficult to find the balance between providing safety from harm for all children, as well as providing a calm, positive connection with the child to who is now physically violent to de-escalate them. Also to handle this situation without exhibiting reactions that could relate to the trauma that the child has faced within their life, such as yelling, or giving a dominating presence when they are acting violently, becomes a difficult balancing act.

In my experience the behaviour I find significantly challenging in the classroom is any involving Aggression. Aggression is a behaviour that I have always struggled knowing how to deal with and the thought of dealing with aggression has often made me feel quite anxious. I have experienced minor aggressive behaviours during multiple placements, for example, being hit by young children when they have become frustrated by a situation. I felt as though I dealt with this effectively and professionally but Intense verbal aggression is a behaviour that I have yet to face in placement or in my professional career and is something that I am still quite unsure how to handle.

I believe that challenging behaviours not only manifest in numerous ways, but are also defined differently by each individual, based on their level of experience, confidence/competence and understanding of the individual student. My own definition of a challenging behaviour is one that distracts from learning, poses threat to student wellbeing (physical, social, psychological) and one that a simple consequence cannot remedy. From my own experience, I have learnt that all behaviour (despite how infuriating it can be for us as the educator) serves a purpose. I have also learnt, that sadly, the majority of students whom exhibit such are those incapable of communicating their distress, fear, anxiety, pain or anger in more appropriate/socially acceptable formats due to a history of trauma.

I have personally found students displaying aggressions and violence to be the most challenging behaviours within the classroom. This behaviour can be incredibly disruptive to other students learning, the individual with the aggressive behaviours learning, and the teaching of the lesson.
Within classroom settings, challenging behaviours can appear in a range of different ways. More often than not, the behaviour is trying to achieve something. Whether this be seeking something, or avoiding something. As teachers, our job is to find the reason behind the behaviour and provide an alternative outlet.
