In Matilda Danny DeVito uses many different film techniques such as camera angles, shots, sounds and lightning. One important film technique used in the film is camera angles. There are a lot of long shot, close-ups, zoom, and high angles use throughout the film. The long shot shows what the character is doing, their location and who they're with.

This long shot shows Matilda talking to the librarian at the front desk. The close-ups show the emotions that are on the character's face. It can show happiness, fear or sadness. In this film, close-ups are used to show that the character is thinking or is looking at something.

In this scene, Matilda is showing Ms. Honey her special abilities. For low angles, the camera looks up on a subject making them look powerful and intimidating. In Matilda whenever Ms. Trunchbull is shown, the camera is usually angled upward to make her seem bigger and more threatening.

Throughout the opening scene of the film, a calm and relaxing soundtrack is played in the background. It is never silent in the background of the film. There is always some type of music going in the scenes. Danny DeVito used a lot of non-diegetic and diegetic sounds. Diegetic sounds help show the emotions of the character by how they react and also increase the emotion of the audience by adding suspense. There is diegetic sound in the living room scene when the tv is playing in the background. In the garage scene where Matilda goes with her dad to fix cars, clanking and drilling sound are mostly heard.

In Matilda costume is used to portray the characteristics of the different characters. In the film, Matilda wears colorful clothing and ribbon in her hair. This indicates she is a good guy because she has lightly colored clothes. Miss Honey also wears a lot of bright colors which symbolize she is a good character who accepts people with open arms no matter how different you are. Miss Trunchbull wears a lot of dark colors portraying that she is an evil character. She feels she is superior compared to everyone else and can bully the kids. She puts fears into the kids instead of doing what a principal should like motivating students.
