By: Tina Nguyen, Rachael Musau, Hannah Park, Alba Obando, Yasamin Aliasgarian
- Your mind stores your perceptions and their interpretations-evaluations so that you can retrieve them later on. This can affect how you think about a person. For example, let's say you found out that someone failed Spanish, so you think they are not too intelligent. But then, that person does really well in Chemistry, but because he did bad in Spanish, your memory may easily forget that they did well in chemistry. That is because that information contradict your schema (patterns of how you organize info) of that person, so this info is easily lost.

Stage two: Organization
Organization by rules---
- Rule of proximity, physical closeness, things that are physically close to another are perceived as a unit. We tend to perceive people who are always together, or messages one after the other, as belong together to one unit.
- Rule of similarity, things that are physically similar are perceived as belonging together in a single unit. People who dress alike belong together. People who work the same jobs, share the same religion, live in the same building.
- Rule of contrast, items people or messages are very different from one another, don't belong together. Too different to be a part of the same unit. If you're the only one who shows up to a hangout in a tuxedo, you'll be seen as too contrasting, not belong to the unit.

Organization by schemata---
- Mental templates that help you organize the millions of thoughts, pieces of info you come into contact with
- You organize people, based on what similarities they share with you

Organization by scripts---
- A body of info about how some action, event, or procedure
- General idea of how some event should play out or unfold
- Example: if you go to a restaurant, you expect to be seated, given menu, given drinks, served in courses, etc.
- Tells you what you can reasonably expect, helps you to feel organized
