"The verses are absolute simplicity: the vocal line stays on one note until he arrives at the name of the woman he's singing to, which he respects, in a secular kind of way, with a four-note phrase..."

- Ben Ratliff

From what I could understand, Ratliff's explanation of transmission is the musical element in which you're able to "transmit" particular emotions to the listener through not only the lyrics, but through factors like the tone of the pieces.

I definitely agree with Ratliff. Sure, the lyrics are an important factor in helping the listener understand what the meaning behind a song is, but something like the tone, whether it's intense or mellow, helps better deliver or "transmit" the emotion that the composer is trying to portray.

The mellow, relaxed, slow tone of the song (along with the lyrics), does a great job at transmitting the raw emotion that Drake is trying to express to the listener. I haven't even experienced what Drake is singing about in this song and it still makes me sad as heck every time I listen to it... what is this sorcery?? It's the powerful musical element of transmission.

John Lennon's soothing voice is showcased in this one song of many. He does a fantastic job at putting the listener in his shoes. Listening, I was able to feel what he was singing. He expressed the emotions of love in a very calm and relaxed tone, which helped me better digest the true behind the song.
