I have started experimenting with materials for the making of Sam’s glasses, I have made a set of three glasses with different materials, paper cardboard and after having a conversation with my father, he suggested a plastic material called foamex. The material foamex is a very hard material, almost like a plastic pdf board it is used to make signs and there was a leftover piece at my dad workshop. 

The board is very hard, and cannot be cut with scissors or a box cutter. So with the help of my dad I drew the template on a piece of paper and he cut the shapes out using a small electrical drill. We filled them down and I haven’t decided whether I need to spray paint them black or paint them with black acrylic paint. 

I have made the cardboard versions of the glasses, along with a plain paper version, (which was most definitely not very practical in the long run, as it was very thin and didn’t hold the shape of the glasses very well) I tried to neatly paper mache the cardboard cutout but it was very difficult and didn’t look as good when I had finished painting it, there were bits of newspaper that hadn’t quite stuck down and because some of the cardboard had cellotape on it so the paint wasn’t sticking to the material either. 

The cardboard was also very flimsy and was bending very easily. I have learnt that for my exhibition cardboard is not the way to make Sam’s glasses, but it might be a material I could try for Julie’s makeup brush as it can be easily bent and folded, I can then apply pva glue to the object to help retain its shape. I can also add pieces of garden string as the bristles for the brush, and I can decorate the shaft of the brush with different coloured paints and glitter gems.

I enjoy crocheting in my spare time, so for Tabitha’s hat I have decided to make a hat for her personal object. She wears beanies and bobble hats the most so I will follow a design that will create a beanie and will add a Pom Pom if I feel it is necessary. I will also make the hate striped, as that is the sort of design/style that Tabitha wears,  using crochet takes a very long time so I will have to make time in my production schedule to allow myself to create this.

My original idea for my exhibition was that I’d have two close ups of my actors, showcasing what body parts/clothing best represents them with typography pieces of each of them running in a diagonal pattern Julie’s would be her typography piece then a photo of her foot then another photo, them Sam’s would be a photo of his earrings then his typography piece then another photo and finally Tabitha’s section would be two photos of her body parts then her typography piece, all hanging down from the ceiling).

But after learning that our exhibition wasn’t going to be held in the motion room like last year, (so my artwork would be harder to display) I had to come up with a new exhibition plan that would wow my audience but also showcasing what my skills can do. After having a chat with Delta I decided to make the objects, and by having a sketchbook too I can put all of the photos I have compiled into it therefore showcasing my photography skills to my assessor as well as having my typography pieces in the sketchbook too just so it is easier to mark. 

I will be picking a spot soon for my exhibition place in the iHub, I am hoping to get a corner or to place my work in the middle of the room, just because it is a good place to have your work,mainly due to the fact you will remember where it is and if in the middle it will be very visible to my audience. I will have a table in front on my (maybe if I am able to hang my work from the ceiling) hanging photography and typography, and on it will be my handmade objects and hanging from the front of the table will be a group typography/photography piece, just to show my work as being connected together and to show originality.

I will also be making business cards to put on my table, as many business men and women attend second year exhibitions, so it would be interesting to see if I get any emails or calls from people asking for my skills to be recognised. 

I have also got some publicity already from friends and colleagues asking if after my college course finishes if I would create typography pieces for them and they would pay me. I found these offers very flattering and have thought about doing this in the summer, as it would create some revenue for when I move on to university and can help pay for some of the activities whilst studying there.
