At the Battle of Marathon the Greeks were outnumbered 2 to 1. The battle took place on a plain that was 5 miles long by 2 miles. The Athenians won mostly because of much better weapons and a very good battle strategy. The Phalanx went against the parts of battle that the Persians excelled at, like long range fighting. The Persian cavalry was missing from the battle with no explanation for their absence, and if they had been present the battle could have gone very differently.

The Athenians knew that they needed a stronger navy to compete against the Persians, who had the strongest navy in the world. Building ships was very expensive and the Athenians did not have the money for that, fortunately a group of slave miners found a huge vein of silver that produced many tons of silver. Themistocles then convinced the city leaders to use the silver to make ships.

The Greeks knew the Persians were advancing throughout Greece and chose a battlefield that would greatly hinder the Persians. They chose a narrow pass that stopped the Persians from using cavalry or using their large advantage in amount of soldiers. The Persians had anywhere from 100,000 to 400,000 soldiers, compared to the estimated 10,000 soldiers that the Greeks had. The Greeks held the mighty Persian army off suffering minor casualties while giving the Persians heavy casualties for many days. This was until a Greek citizen named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks and showed Xerxes, the Persian ruler, a pass that would take them around the Greek army so they could outflank them. This resulted in the Persians burning down Athens.

This battle was fought in a place that again favored the Greeks. The Persians had many more ships, but under the command of Themistocles the Athenians won. The Persians lost over 300 ships, while the Greeks lost about 50. If the Athenians had not spent the extra money on their navy, then it would have been certain doom for Greece.
