The Scramble for Africa was a big moment during this time period because it showed how Europe was now incharge and was using their power to expand their empires throughout the world the scramble for Africa was when all the great nations of Europe came together and took apart pieces of Africa to be claimed by the Europeans and taken from the native Africans.

The Opium Wars

The Opium Wars were caused when Great Britain were selling opium to China through Hong Kong even when the Emperor of China didn't want any opium to sold into China. The result of this war was Hong Kong being given to Britain and allowing Britain free trade with all Chinese merchants. This shows how even once great powers like china could not handle the growing power of Europe during the age of imperialism.

Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin was a scientist who was know for his theory of evolution by natural selection in which the weaker species would die out while the stronger and more suitable ones to the environment would live on. This led to the theory called Social Darwinism to be created where Europeans claimed they were superior since they had more power and so they were correct in their imperialism because they were helping less advanced tribal nations.

King Leopold II

King Leopold II of Belgium invaded the congo and took it as his own where he would call it the Congo Free State. However it was instead used for its raw resources where King Leopold II would commit atrocities and enslave the people in order to get rubber while forcing the native africans to live in harsh and brutal conditions. This shows how much of an affect the Scramble for Africa and imperialism had on the world since it made things like this possible.

David Livingstone

David Livingstone was a famous explorer who traveled through Africa and discovered many African lakes and rivers. He also contributed to the end of slavery greatly by publishing what he say in the slave trades during his time in Africa and spent years calling for it to end until it finally did.

Asia has been suffering from European intervention for a long time during this time period. China in particular has been greatly suffering from the opium wars and the forced trading imposed on them by European nations. While Japan was in the middle of industrializing and catching up to the European nations. Interaction with the environment was going on when Russia was trying to force China to let them build railroads within China to support their timber company which would be the cause of the Russo-Japanese War. In terms of social changes Asia has had its hierarchy completely changed within China they had been suffering with Europeans walking all over them and in Japan their society had been changing significantly due to rapid modernization. In terms of economy China had its economy being depleted through forced trade while Japan had its economy suffer from the Russo-Japanese War and was in need of resources. In terms of culture both Japan and China had its culture influenced by European traditions and innovations. In terms of Technology Japan had its military quickly modernize utilizing the European rifles and steamboats.
