In 1981 ,Mauritania became the last country to abolish slavery . It wasn't until 2007 that it was made a crime . Ever since , there has been one slave owner that was successfully prosecuted .To this day , the government has denied the existence of slavery . Abolitionists in the country are being arrested and tortured for their work to free slaves. In addition to that, any foreign journalists that report on the subject are either arrested or deported back to their home countries .
In this padlet , I will be exploring three main questions . Why is the government denying the existence of slavery ?
What are the psychological effects of being a slave ?
Is there racism within Mauritania that enables the survival of slavery?

The psycological affects of slavery

The CNN article claimed that: "In Mauritania , the shackles of slavery are mental as well as Mauritania." This gives the reader a glimpse of the physiological aspect of slavery . In the county's slave population , women are often sexualy assulted by their masters. The white moors . This leaves them with a sense of denial a psychological effect of slavery and and sexual harassment . This also makes them dissociate from their "work" as a slave thus making them more vulnerable for more abuse .
In addition to that ,they are left with an overwhelming fear of provoking unrest that leads to violence with their words . Hence why they try to please the abuser and worrying about things that might provoke them . Due to the fear of provoking their slaves , they demand more as a way to practise power and control. This leads slaves like Moulkheir isolated so that their master can criticize them as a way to manipulate them .
The slaves may rationalize the criminal behavior of their master due to Stockholm Syndrome . This leads them to help the master with their emotions and feeling the pain of their master rather than their own . They are also far more likely to develop PTSD and have higher suicide rates than their free counterparts.
As a result of constant abuse , the slave learns to accept it as part of their life .

Racism in Maurtiana

In the aforementioned article the reader is provided with a hint of the prevalent racism in Mauritania . This issue dates back to the middle ages when the ancestors of the white Moors had immigrated to north west africa/ sub saharan africa . They settled into these lands and enslaved the native black population via abduction . This laid the foundation of slavery and created an ancient divide that was until recently being challenged in the urban areas of the country . However in the rural parts of said country, the white Moors still cling to the supremacists ideologies and views of their Arab and Berber ancestors. It is not just the people of Mauritania who discriminate against their own countrymen , the government also has policies that under represent the entire demographic of their country or develop acts and laws that favor one race or language . An example of this being in a report done by amnesty international on 29 of march in the last year (2018) claimed that the constitution act of defining Arabic as the sole official language has " constituted a major obstacle for non - Arabic speaking Afro mauritian communities accessing essential services as well as positions of responsibility in the private and public sectors."

Goverment denial of slavery

It is widely known, due to the CNN article and others that the government of Mauritania actively denies the existence of slavery. They arrest or torture workers of NGOs that campaign to put an end to slavery, they deport or arrest journalists who report on the matter . They even went as far as claiming that the only major issue is poverty not poverty and slavery . They do this under the influence of several socio-economic factors like lack of law enforcement due to the country's vast desert size and poverty that limits the chances of thrival for freed slaves in the country . One factor of this is the interests in maintaining the privileges of the ethic elite that most judges and police belong to . This is ensured by the various interviews that the president does that sends a clear message to the law enforcement that they cannot do anything that undermines this official narrative of the non existence of slavery . They also do this from the lack of stories and accounts that have yet to come from slaves and their freed counter parts .
Due to the country being a muslim majority country , they are very cynical and skeptical of foreign (particalry western ) NGO's coming to their land via the reason of human rights(slavery) . This stems from a belief that the reason that these NGOs are working in Mauritania here to discredit the religion of Islam and pursue their own ideological agenda .
