I feel these students are the hardest to work with because outbursts and be sudden and unpredictable. These students can also destroy the emotional stability of classmates and the teacher. I will try to be intentional to reframe the negative behavior in a positive light. I will also try the strategy of writing down a prompt for them on a sticky not instead of engaging in the argument with them.

A couple things that I am going to try to do is look for positive behavior with these students as much as possible. I will continue to build relationships with them and offer a choice when I am able. I also really like the idea of giving a direction and then moving away right away, so that you don't become engaged in a power struggle.
I will also try to change my terminology when thinking about students and their behavior. This is hard to do in the moment!

I know that I need to change my mindset with this students. I do believe building relationships work. It is hard for me when I see all the students, but I have noticed that after I have had some of these students for a couple of years that we are building relationships and I notice a big change in most of them. I will also try to change my terminology when dealing with these students.

I got a lot out of this chapter. Working with students who have autism has made me practice some of these strategies. I think the strategies can be used with any student with difficult behaviors. I think creating a positive, structured environment where the students have responsibilities and choices can be effective for everyone and can be preventative at the same time.

I am going to try some of the ideas with my students. I like the idea of showing a student a visual or note on a sticky note, and then walking away. Also, I want to work on changing my own mindset to form thoughts about the student a positive way instead of focusing on the negative.

I liked the idea of building relationships with students and their families. It is important to give the students choices which lead them on the path to completing the task that you need them to do.
