1. A marine flare is a universal signal used at sea to indicate a need for assistance or the marking of a particular place. The flare is designed to produce a brilliant light that can be seen for miles, especially on a flat surface such as the sea. Mixing potassium nitrate with charcoal and sulfur and adding certain metals such as aluminum or magnesium produce the bright light of a flare. The metals burn to produce the brilliant light without exploding, making it safer for the person setting the flare. The light of a flare is so intense that it can even burn underwater to mark submerged objects. What is left after the metal is burned is an ash-colored compound that is a combination of the metal and oxygen.
