Consistency. Having one meeting per week makes it challenging for students to learn topics in depth and every lesson begins to feel like a recap. Especially if a student misses one class or the LC is out for a day.

I try to make Te Whare Tapa Whā relevant by relating the four elements to the learners everyday lives. EG device over use effects your taha hinengaro and taha whanau.

Connecting the learning

Connecting the lessons as they go, begin year 7 with a basic level and repeat the topics but more developed for year 8 and so on. This way the students are getting a reminder of what topics they have covered and diving deeper into them then previously.

Coming in late in the year, jumping straight into teaching puberty with no established relationship with a new group of students. Took a number of weeks to break down barriers and get some genuine responses.

Some relevant PD. Talking with colleagues there was some confusion over what could/could not be covered given the sensitive material. Some relevant PD going over what can be covered and some fun activities to get engagement would be really helpful.

I found the nutrition unit interesting but easy to find misinformation. Relationships is difficult to teach. More clear guidelines on what should be taught for puberty would be nice.

Since Y7-8 and Y9-10 have similar topics, perhaps having some sub topics under each would be helpful for planning.

I was trying to squeeze in a lot of content in Y7, and feel like not wanting to repeat exactly in Y8. If sub topics were spread out a bit more, perhaps it is easier to go deeper while the brief surface things can be recaped.

Feel like there may be a lot of misinformation... feel like I am teaching what I have learnt when I was in school. Key readings or science based updates may help me build more confidence.
