The Western United States were settled in the 1800's. Resources and land were the main drivers of settlement. Some of this land was purchased from France, and the rest was won in wars with Mexico.

Timber is one of the many resources found in the Western United States. It is found in many areas, but especially from the state of California all the way to the border with Canada.

Oil

Oil is found in the southern parts of the western United States. Oil is a vital part of the modern economy, being used to power vehicles and many things in our modern society.

Silver and Other Minerals

Gold originally drew many people west. In states like California, Idaho, Wyoming and many others, people mined gold from mountains or found it in streams. Many other minerals like silver and copper are also present, and are mined for use in things like modern electronics.

Food

While people used the land for food and did not find it here, the west presents much fertile soil for growing foods. In states like Idaho many carb heavy crops like potatoes and beans are grown. On coasts, fishing is, and has been, a large source of food since the continent was first inhabited.
