This fallacy gets its excellent name thanks to a fictional story, an anecdote of a Texan who fired his gun randomly at a barn wall; then, he painted a bullseye around the cluster of bullet holes he had left—claiming himself to be a sharpshooter.

What type of fallacy is it? When does it occur?

The Texas Sharpshooter fallacy is a fallacy of selective attention or cherry-picking. It is a standard statistical error when people selectively choose information to back up an argument or reach a conclusion that is stated with manipulated data or evidence. Ergo, the decision is biased since it is set up to favor an opinion, excluding the relevant data that might prove the opposite or weaken it. Concerning the fictional story, the shooter is forging or manipulating evidence to show his expertise in marksmanship.

What are the consequences of accepting this fallacy as a veridic argument?

The main consequence of this fallacy is getting drawn to false conclusions by ignoring the possibility of finding counterarguments. However, it also undermines critical thinking since accepting it means we jeopardize our ability to analyze data and evaluate information objectively, which makes us more susceptible to misinformation. It can also confirm biased decisions, reinforcing that we seek to support only our beliefs.

Are people aware of committing the fallacy?

People may be aware or not. However, it is more reasonable to think that it is more common to find people intentionally using the Texas Sharpshooter Fallacy. The main intention is not to let a broad spectrum of evidence lead to misinformation and manipulated conclusions, regardless of the consequence. When not aware, it is essential to identify when people are cherry-picking information since the results are still the same.
