Because of the large amounts of people living with heart failure, the FDA has allowed Abiomed to perform 15 implants as part of a trial. This was established because there is 39,000 deaths per year from heart failure and some of which is because of the wait for a heart transplant. The first artificial heart device was in 1982. The man it was tested on lived for 112 days before he was killed caused by complications of the device. It was later discontinued because of its complications due to 4 more people dying. On July 2, 2001 surgeons of the Jewish hospital succeeded in performing their first artificial heart transplant.
